  1. Hi folks,

I’ve never really introduced myself here on this site (even though I’ve made a few posts), so here goes. I play under the screen name “tymzend” (pronounced “Time’s End” – used to be the name of a band I played in). I’m a Mechanical Engineer, which is probably why poker intrigues me so much (I love the math).

I’ve only been playing poker for about 4 months. Never once played before, poker of any kind. I started watching it on TV now and then, and my best friend (who loves to bet on anything – “I’ll bet you a buck that I can guess the amount of Fritos left in that bag closer than you” – haha, the guy loves to gamble), started suggesting that I try playing Hold’Em. I resisted for awhile, and then signed up on party to play with play chips. Well, that didn’t take long to become boring, so I joined UB and made a deposit.

I started off playing low limit games, and a few $5 tourneys (SNG), and had a relative amount of success (probably more like “luck” given my experience level). I won a few, placed in a few, lost more, but needless to say, I was hooked.

This site (P5’s) really made me want to learn the game and play on a more serious level. I am like a sponge for information. You people here have so much knowledge about this game. I love to go watch all of you play online, trying to learn every little bit that I can (ANYTHING that will help me improve my game). There are so many resources from which to draw knowledge for learning. I joined NSX’s site, and that has really changed my thinking.

The SNG tourneys is really where I like to play (been playing just the $10 ones lately, seeing how my % is over an extended period of time). Myself against 9 other players. Most have more experience than I do, which makes it even more fun.

I didn’t jump in with a bunch of $$, ready to “gamble”. I want to learn to be a better player. My goal for SNG’s (at first) is to be able to average 60% in the money. If I can turn 1/3 of those into wins, then I can start building a bankroll for myself.

I do seem to run into trouble once I’ve made it into the last 3 (I made a separate post about this earlier), and it’s probably a combination of my mentality and inexperience why I don’t place higher than 3rd very often. Mainly because I play too tight up to that point, and am short stacked when it counts. I’ll get that figured out in time (hopefully sooner than later).

I’ll probably say things that don’t make sense. I’ll probably ask questions where the answer seems obvious to most all of you. I don’t really complain about bad beats, they happen. I lose mostly due to bad calls, which is what I want to avoid. I’d much rather lose to a bad beat if I'm going to lose.

Anyway, I’ll be seeing you all around. Just wanted to give you an idea of who I am. Just an appreciative rookie, willing to learn.

And just to let you know, I truly appreciate when you folks take time to answer my questions, and give your opinions. I am grateful for that.

Ok, well, I would say “see you on the felt”, but you folks play more expensive felt than I, so, you’d me more likely to see me on the rail, lol.

    Peace out.

    tymzend

  4. tymzend,

I'm not anyone you should want to learn from because, frankly, I SUCK! However, I do want to say you are well on your way to becoming a very good poker player due to the attitude you are approaching it with. One of the biggest struggles many beginning players fight is "already knowing it all". Admitting you don't and being willing to learn from others is a huge step in beating the game.

    Best of luck,

    wsaul
  5. Thanks for the kind words, wsaul,

I definitely don't know everything, and I'm sure even the pro's still acquire tidbits of knowledge every now and then. I don't think it takes that long to learn the theory of hold'em, and the way to play. I think it takes much longer to attain the level of discipline while playing to become an effective and profitable player over an extended period of time.

    Anyway, I love this forum.
