All of the literature regarding bankroll management is always on the side of extreme caution. The whole point of bankroll management seems to be avoid going bust, not to make the most profit, like the guy that plays the safest stocks for the most security but not necessarily making the plays to make the most money.
What I am interested in knowing from some of the poker experts that have been around for awhile is which is the best way to make a lot of money quick in poker while excepting a high probability of going bust? What is the best risk reward play?
I've been in a rut past few months while living in Thailand, making only a small profit in MTTs. My bankroll hasn't been growing and I've basically just been paying my living expenses. I simply don't have the patience to grind sit and goes or middle limit cash games and MTTs are not nearly as interesting as they once were. Whereas once when I had a big stack late in a tourney it was a great feeling now its just anotehr day at the office. Perhaps this has to do with burn out factor, playing too much sapping the enjoyment out of the game. I watch my friend whose an online pro grinding out 200-400 a day in 1/2 no limit and heads up matches who has a 30k bankroll and I just can't do that.
I had a pretty good bankroll last year when I made some big scores in tourneys online and was doing pretty well. Then I blew about 25k in big live tourneys that I did terrible in and another 30k in personal stuff over the past 6 months. So when my bankroll had peaked and hovered around 40K-50K all of that slowly brought it down to 10-15k where it has been fluctuating of late. Still a workable roll but hovering near rock bottom.
What I am interested in is quadupling my bankroll in about a months time. I don't care if I go bust as there are other things I can do to make money and just because I bust doesn't mean I will quit poker. So many of the pros have gone bust multiple times over, including my best poker friends. I haven't gone bust yet just starting out but I'm tired of the grind as well. I want to win a lot of money quick or go bust. If I succeed in winning a lot of money I will probably then play the live circuit of tourneys with $500-3k buy ins.
Which of these, or other suggestions, has the best risk reward for a winning poker player to win a lot quickly:
- Transfer all of my poker cash to party poker and play the high limit Omaha games. Omaha is my favorite and most successful cash game and you can win or lose a massive amount quickly. Play a loose gambling style.
- Play all the big buy in online tourneys with big prize pools. Play every Sunday tourney and a few other big ones throughout the week with about total 3k buy ins each week. Play a loose gambling style.
- Wait for the WSOP and play in the Omaha side games there. If I'm successful in the omaha also play the tournaments.
- Cash out my winnings and play in 7-8 live tourneys with 1-2k buys ins during a WPT. -
sounds to me like you are looking for the quick easy way out
if you are going to take that mindset, be fully prepared to dump whats left of your roll. I don't see you making clear decisions if you are trying to 'quadruple up quick'
Rome wasn't built in a day man. If you really want to quad your roll quick....then why fuck around....you might as well play 1K heads up matches or hell even 5K
better yet you might as well put it all on a few hands of blackjack -
Whatever you do, can we film it and call it the first 30 minutes of rounders?
All jokes aside, it seems to me that if you really wanted to do this that the sunday MTT idea would be the safest. More chances to hit it big than a side game. -
play craps

Yes I'm a slacker looking for the easy way out and a degenerate gambler, hence wanting to win a lot quickly.
However I'm also a decent poker player (but not elite I acknowledge with only a year's experience) with an edge over the field so atleast in this way I have some control overy my chances. And a months time is a lot of time to gradually accrue money, its not pure gambling like taking 1 shot on the UB 50/100 Omaha table or craps. As long as I play well and don't have a bad streak or go on tilt, I should be able to win, maybe win a lot if I get a little lucky. -
I have almost $240 in my account so, I am OBV the best person to make a reccommendation on this.
If I was in your situation and was seriously willing to bust or see if I could make a profit, I would play only $500 sitngos and if I happened to reach my goal I would play $1000 sitngos. -
If you got lucky in the UB $50/100 PLO game you'd make a killing. Look at the stack those guys make everyday. If you hit it right then you could make $50K in a few hours. I don't like the big tourrney route bc theres too much luck. Try a big cash game.

i put 400 damn dollars on full tilt and started playing 5/10 NL. I got it up to a quick 120 0 dollars and saw there was some damn pro on there who i wanted a lil peice of. well I got involved in a pot with him and decided to get clever. I decided I was gonna bluff him like a mofo and show it to everyone after he folded. well he ended up calling his damn bottom pair and ended up winning the huge pot. what a dumbass....

seriously: ask your self... why are you thinking in these terms?
why is quading up your $ such a big deal -- right now?
what is it about now--and not 2 months ago--that made you think - "eff BR management."
make sure you think long and hard before you do what you do.

dude i have done this experiemnt before and it doesnt work out. about a month ago, i deposited just 100 dollars into bodog to see what he site had to offer and looking to gamble, lil on sports, but mostly on poker. i played wiht my entire bankroll the whole time, jumping levels at soon as i could. well within 5 days i had turned that 100 into about 11k ending up at the 10/20 nl table. i was riding a major high man, thought i was invincible. well needless to say it didnt last long, i had goals of turning that 11k into 100 k in no time and ended up at 0. yeah thats right, a big fat 0 in my bodog account. entire bankroll down the drain in about 48 hours all because i was playing outside of my bankroll. when playing like this you might hit it big, but know when to get out!

The goal is meaningless, just an abitrary number, and winning or losing that money won't make much difference either way.
But maybe it goes deeper than that, that I need to hit rock bottom, get back to basics, get a real job and a real life. I've had a crazy lifestyle past few years flying around the world, banging lots of girls, blowing my money, doing crazy things and ignoring my family and my responsibilities. Things like poker, and selling Magic cards before that, kept the bills paid and my lifestyle going. But I wasn't going anywhere in life or accomplishing anything. The girls I met were 2-3 month flings, the friends I made short time acquaintences, and the money I made in one hand and out the next, nothing I did was meant to last or grow into something meaningful.
I don't know if I'll hit rock bottom, but perhaps that's what I need to do to get back to reality. -
Yo Qcty: let's see....you're flying all over the world and banging lots of women and playing poker and spending lots of money.......what is NOT to like here ? Seems to me you've already died and gone to heaven. I dunno how blowing all your money is gonna make things better ?

A psychologist would probably find it interesting that the topic of this thread is " I want to Bust or quadruple up" and not the other way round.
It may even seem like you are on self-destruct mission cos you are not in a happy place poker-wise. -
What you are describing is classic addiction and a serious problem. Wait until you hit bottom and go to a gamblers anonymous meeting. Remember no matter how bad it gets you can still recover. PM me when you need help.

Take the 15k, buy a 12 month CD and forget about it.
You will then be broke and moving down the path you have chosen.
At the end of the year, you can then decide to re-start your poker career with your 15k in found money or rollover the CD and continue your square job. -
Sounds like you want to punish yourself for your hedonist lifestyle. This is not much different than those that punish themselves because they have become successful.
There is No Real benefit from punishing yourself by blowing the 15k. If you are done with this lifestyle, use the 15k to start another one. You could use it to enroll in school, deposit on apartment etc. 15k isn't that much $$$ unless you have none at all.
Sounds like while the poker money was flowing that you lost your ability to value $$$ accurately.
Invest the 15k in yourself or some real estate or something. If you truly feel that blowing it is your only option, you might as well donate it to a charity like the Red Cross or a homeless shelter. At least you will feel good a month later.
If these ideas don't appeal to you, give the money to someone you trust and tell them not to give it back to you for 1 yr. -
Pontoon baby!

I suspect this sort of thing runs in your family. Addictive behaviors, etc. Same with me. You might want to consider this in making your choices.

take your whole bankroll to ultimatebet and play 50-100nl against greenplastic and pray you win 2 big hands..or you could challenge patrick atonius to a 500-1000 limit match on ongame network. 2 awesome ideads to quadruple your bankroll.....for real though obviously if u want to win more you need to move up levels, if u cant grind SnGs then what about playing the $100 or 200 tournys....or the PP steps for cash...alot of diff ways to win then bust bro..lol

Take your bankroll and throw the entire thing into some sort of investment...and then stop playing poker for a year. Get a real job, find out how much it sucks, then you'll appreciate your poker playing days and realize that you probably don't want to work a real job for the rest of your life.
The point is, you can "hit bottom" without actually throwing away your money. Give up poker and gambling completely and I can guarantee that you'll feel like you've hit bottom. Having to work a 9-5 job after the lifestyle you've just described will give you the same feeling as throwing away 15K.
I agree with the post that said you have an addiction. Throw your money into an investment where you can't touch it for a period of a couple years, try this "living the real life" thing, and attended some GA classes. If after a year or two you still feel the need to go bust, then pull your money out and go nuts. -
Better yet, dump a grand to Hughester on pokerstars. That's like throwing your money away right there.

Double Down Son

q-if you do this youll regret it.
my suggestion, take a week off from poker, think about how much 15k is and all the fun stuff you could do with that money. Then after a week, if you still want to gambleit away. Play 5k heads up matches. It will be quick and the least pain.
