Don't see what else I could have done . . . I figured he had an overpair or a flush draw in the first place . . . Any advice on how I should have played this any differently? -
You got it all in on the flop with middle set.
You got outdrawn to a four flush on the river. There is nothing wrong with your line here. I would get it all in on the flop 100% of the time in this spot. The result was unlucky, it happens.
GL at the tables. -
I agree, you play it well, you got the chips in as a monster favorite - he hit runner runner to take it down - it happens, don't let it get to you - move on.
my 2 cents -
If it wasn't for people making 4-flushes on me in cash games, I'd be a goddamn millionaire.
Okay, maybe a thousandaire, but still.
Well played. Got your money in good. Got outdrawn. You did everything right. -
problem with this post... the title containing "result"... don't be result oriented, what you did was obviously correct.
though, be aware, RealPamc is so short that set-mining usually isn't worth it. Its just the fact that his raise is is only 3x bb that you have to call. 4-5x bb and you should probably fold unless you think it is likely people will call behind you (not raise). -
Thanks for the advice everyone.

IMO correct play for cash game. As long as you get someone to put all the money in when you are >50% to win, you made a "correct" play and in this case, you probably did just that. It's more likely his flop bet is to prevent anyone else from drawing to a flush. You might not have made the "best" play but that's a different topic and one that I can't explain :-)

However if as you say, you figured him for a flush draw, just call his first bet and fold if more clubs come. I would have re-raised preflop and with his J-J we'd probably be all in and people would say "the jacks held up". -
Call and fold if more clubs come? If you figure your opponent to be on a draw you can take one of two actions.
1.) Try to price him out of chasing his draw
2.) Make him pay to chase his draw
Either way he's making the incorrect plays and you're making the correct one if he tries to chase. Here's the other thing about "calling and folding if more clubs come". How are you supposed to make any money with your set? The way to make money off of draws is to make them put money in the pot while they're drawing. When a guy ends up with a busted flush draw on the river he's not going to be putting more money in the pot. The only chance you have to get paid on this hand is to do the betting while he's still chasing. (If he was actually playing the flush draw, which in this case he wasn't) -
I propose that you should analyze the hand from two views. You already know what you did, so let's look at it from Realpamc's point of view:
Seat 1: FIGHTERdogg ($11.80 in chips)
Seat 2: jj downunder ($23.50 in chips)
Seat 3: Rudi2570 ($4.25 in chips)
Seat 4: Justelis ($26.15 in chips)
Seat 6: GROM95 ($24.25 in chips)
Seat 7: RealPamc ($9.50 in chips) << One note to start. The short stack usually indicates a weaker player, but that can't be determined here. You have furnished any background information on his/her play.
Seat 8: Aposta87 ($47.25 in chips)
Seat 9: Th3 ZodiAc ($23.80 in chips)
Rudi2570: posts small blind $0.10
Justelis: posts big blind $0.25
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Aposta87 [??]<<<< I put ? in here since Real doesn't know what you have
GROM95: folds
Dealt to RealPamc[JsJc]: << He raises $0.50 to $0.75 << He makes a standard 3*bb open raise from early position. It's entirely correct to bet 3* or 4* early position pre-flop.
Aposta87: calls $0.75 <<<< You call with a medium pair because you might have the best hand if your opponent raised with over cards and/or connectors. You could raise to define his hand as an alternate move, but you might get shut out if he comes over the top indicating you are beat or racing. It's a cash game so you don't need to over commit before you get more information. Post flop is generally where the money is made in cash games.
Th3 ZodiAc: folds
FIGHTERdogg: folds
jj downunder: folds
Rudi2570: folds
Justelis: folds
*** FLOP *** [8d Tc 3c]
Pot = (.35 + 1.50) = 1.85
RealPamc:[Jc Js] bets $1.75 << He has an over pair to a somewhat drawy board. He bets an amount designed to protect his hand and/or take it down without resistance.
Aposta87: raises $1.75 to $3.50<< You make a mini-raise with your set because you don't want to lose your customer. You have no reason to shut him out when you expect and want to get his whole stack.
RealPamc: raises $5.25 to $8.75 and is all-in<<< He probably thinks you are making a small semi-bluff to slow him down. He thinks you want to draw cheap for the str8 or flush. To protect his over pair, he pushes his small stack all-in to protect his hand. Good or bad that's what he's probably thinking.
Aposta87: calls $5.25<< You call with what is 98% probably the best hand.
*** TURN *** [8d Tc 3c] [4c]
*** RIVER *** [8d Tc 3c 4c] [7c]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
RealPamc: shows [Jc Js] (a flush, Jack high)<< He gets lucky and draws out with a hand he thought was the best.
Aposta87: mucks hand <<< You get lucky because he's probably a bad player playing on short money. You only lost $9.50.
RealPamc collected $18.40 from pot
As was mentioned by jester, you played the hand fine.
Sometimes the pre-flop favorite actually wins in poker. -
Mybluedog, thanks very much for taking the time to analyze the hand for me in such detail. I appreciate it. Its alwasy great to get some good advice from various players to try and fine tune or tweak any parts of your game. Thanks again.
