  1. I am thinking of playing in my first live tourney in Mississippi in January. The buy in is low(340) I realize for some people, but hey you gotta start somewhere. My question is are these usually 1 day events? how many people, etc.? I live about 4 hours away so is it even worth my time playing even if I do win it all (Don't worry I know I wont, I am not delusional). Also, are the players in these low buy ins so poor that if I play ABC poker I could at least go deep to get some confidence? Any constructive criticisms or thouhgts, advice, etc. would be appreciated.
  2. I would look at the website of the tourney and look at the previous tournies with the same or close to same buy-in/structure (at the same venue obv). This should give you a good idea of how many people/length of time it will take.
  3. yeah its most likely 1 day and the play will be much like a $10 mtt online. there will probably be anywhere from 50-300 ppl some good players and some really really bad players.

  4. Sounds like you're going to the Beau Rivage for some of the preliminary events to the Jan 2nd thru Jan 17th
    or

Harrah's Tunica WSOP circuit event Jan 2oth thru Feb 3rd.

Both these events draw lots of locals and regulars to the respective tours. I have played in both venues. You will find a mix of unsophisticated players and some regulars, as well as a few named players testing the waters. There are a few decent, good regulars that make this a stop on their winter menu. In past years, some of these lower buy-in events you mentioned have drawn from 500 to 1500 entrants. The last couple years the events have played as two day events. The first day plays down to final table or 2:00am and the remaining players return the next day at 2:00 or 4:00pm depending on the number of players remaining.

It's a worth while event to get your feet wet in live tournament play. You do have a chance to make it into the money and deep run if you run good and play reasonably well. The pay-out structure usually pays out 10% of the entrants so the money will be decent if you can make final two tables. You will be challenged to play some good poker and pay attention to the players at your table. Many of the players will be like you, new to live play or home game wonders (think they own the world). You will see some strange plays by these players. "They have watched poker on TV." :D They think they know the moves. Some times they make the wrong moves at the right times (you could take some horrible beats). That's just poker.

    Advice:
Play, but be realistic about your chances. If you have lots of experience online and have lots of final table finishes in the $20 to $50 dollar events, you could do well. If you have a small amount of online experience and few deep runs, your live experience in likely to be about the same. You do have a chance. Everyone starts somewhere.
  5. Yeah the Beau Rivage is where I'm heading and I appreciate all the advice.
