Phil Hellmuth raises 2x exclusively early in mtts. so does that alan goehring guy, and eric lindgren goes between 2-3x the majority of hand.....pros and cons of this style. I know late in mtts i only raise about 2.5x since the blinds are so high, but early on depending on the table i open raise to 4-5x the majority of the time....pros and cons of the min raising preflop. They are quoted as saying, they dont want people to fold preflop to their raise....thoughts?

This depends on a couple of things. If you don't mind playing multiway pots postflop, and you can do it well, why not raise small? Also, playing pots postflop becomes a lot more profitable for a really good postflop player when everyone is sitting on a mountin of chips (like you have early in a lot of the big 10k live events)
Preflop I like to always raise 3x. I don't like to encourage action, but I find the 5x raise and such to be a little excessive, even early when everyone wants to come in. -
Ive recently tried to bring my pre flop raises down to 2 - 3 x bb early on in a tourney. The reason being, Im finding in the stakes I play at ( <$10) that if my opponents are going to call a raise, they are going to call it wether its 2, 3, 4 or 5 times the BB. So, if the blinds are 10/20 and i raise 2x bb with AQs and the flop scares me, ive got away with only putting 40 chips in as opposed to say 100 chips.

but if you have AA and you get four callers and the flop comes Js9s3h you dont have any clue who played Qs4s or Jd9h.

In a nutshell, the people that those pros face on a daily basis respect a 2-3x BB raise (in general). Whereas, the people that you (and pretty much everyone reading this post) play online on a daily basis don't.
Pros raise 2-3x in a tourney and people with A7 off are folding. You raise 2-3x in an online tourney and that person repops you with A7 off; especially if you only min-raise. -
I think I know why they do this....First of all, they have a decent hand, so they dont mind if the BB calls. Also, with stacks of 10,000 and blinds starting at 25/50, most people are not going to call for 100, but fold for 150, so when they get reraised or get called and then have to fold on the flop, they save themselves that extra $50. Also, dont kid yourself, the fact that they are Erik Lindgren and alan goehring is already a deterrant to someone else thinking about entering the pot.
