i'm not planning on doing so anytime soon, but when and if someone elects to move up a level in SNGs, what is considered appropriate sample size to determine if you are ready? 500? 1000? somewhere in between? or more?

If you trust yourself to be subjective about it. I'd say even a few hundred is enough to tell you if you're good at/outmatched at a certain level. A larger sample is required to work out a true win rate.
If you have the roll and don't find yourself attached to a buy in - fire away at a higher level. You might lose money but you'll gain experience quickly.
e.g. I've moved from $6 turbo's to $30/$35/$50 sngs in the past 3 months. I only have a few hundred at the $20 level but if i can afford it - i go for the higher levels. A few hundred sngs where you keep having to drop down a level is the only price you'll pay.
Good luck
