to be honset, i always feel a bit of a guilty conscience taking money from complete degens, because i used to be that kid losing $$ i couldn't afford to lose
-
Do you feel bad taking my $ betting on if there were more people on the pendleton picture table with hats or without hats? Then on how long it would take bklg to exit the bathroom?
-
Yes I did actually, You never paid me, and I felt bad asking you for it, so I never got paid iirc.

Took my GF to London last spring... hehe, she's really into poker now, play money account and all

just tell her you play tournaments only and the chips are considered play money but there's a random prize pool determined by the casino which is how you turn a profit

Couldnt say better myself except if she doesnt appreciate you making some money on other schmucks then she probably is too soft to be in the real world and you need to dump her. She sounds like someone that would rather work at a non profit company and feel good about herself but live in a crappy apartment then be successful at a career and actually try to live for the good life. Oh sure, we need people like that in this world, but they arent called girlfriends. They are called ugly, fat girls with lots of cats to come home to.

Why does she think you are taking peoples money? Just be honest with her and show her your stats. I really don't get this post.
-
Poker will always be frowned upon...and girlfriends will always have some sort of problem with what your doing...good luck finding people that 100% support playing poker for a living. Its nearly impossible to come by...and for good reason. Doesn't matter how good you are, you can always lose. Also...it is still considered "gambling" in everyone who doesn't play pokers eyes. Good luck

just say its immoral to let a sucker keep his money ;)

That is such a retarded statement for something that is a legit concern to people who care about more then just their financial status in this ill-driven society. There is a distinct difference between being what you would call a softie who has compassion with those less well off just to feel better about themselves and those who actually question the morality of the things they do in life. To some living ' the good life' might not come with a career and financial succes and its not that we ' need those people too' - I have the feeling there are far too few of them.

If she doesn't support what you want to do...get out of the relationship.
If you let her influence you about gambling, that will only be the start.
As far as taking peoples money goes, nobody forces them to gamble, you cant take care of every lame duck on the planet. -

Your cups never been half full has it.. -
Now, some people might look down on haonhacks mechanics, call it immoral.
But as Canada Bill Jones said, "It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money."
Like they teach you in One-L... caveat emptor, pal. -
Today I asked my gf what her thoughts were on this topic.
To great relief ..... *DRUM ROLL*
She agreed that it is not my fault and that they don't have to sit down at the table. Pretty much said if I am the one not getting total thrashed and losing my money she is happy.
She used to have a bad outlook on poker cause she had a d-bag bf before, but I have slowly show her how it does not have to be a bad thing and she doesn't mind poker as much anymore. -
try to explain a downswong and stay positive. Do not play ur drunk uncle in UNO for his sweet rims. it will balance itself out.
-
Ive considered it to be the same thing as owning a liquor store. Your gonna get some customers that know how to do it responsibly, and occasinally u got the hobo that just scrounged up 5$ for another bottle. But for some reason that business isnt as frowned upon

This is the point. People play poker for entertainment. Because they are ok with losing a good amount and a lot of people play, it creates salaries for someone. It's much like the music, movie, professional sports, and even they guy playing on the street. I seriously can't walk 2 blocks without spending $10.32 nowadays and you can get your heart rate climbing when calling a huge bluff or pulling one off from the comfort of your own home. And don't forget that if the deck hits you hard enough in any tournament, you can win it.

As poker pros, you are more part of a player in the entertainment industry. It seems that our game has enough people that like playing with other players (think Full Tilt Pro/Moneymaker effect) that it enhances prize pools. You are just an actor playing a game.
If you want to tell your girlfriend what you do, tell her you are part of a game that people love and you spend your earnings somewhere, and the person who earns your rake spends their money somewhere (probably not the US since we can't be invested in a poker site probably, maybe, sort of under the law). If she keeps nagging you about poker and how you do nothing, you either have to deal with it or find someone else.
I've generally found two types of people out there with attitudes towards poker players. The "you do what! That's Awesome!!" camp and the very skeptical gambling is bad crowd. I think if anyone educated understands what's going on in this industry stays skeptical, they wouldn't be for me. You have to make that call on your own. Good luck sir. -
I found this and apology7's post very helpful

thanks for the help guys, i'll be able to defend this great game a lot better next time. oh and whoever said she'd be the type of person to want to work at a non-profit and stuff, you're right.
i've been using the entrepreneurial aspect of it too, it's my best avenue to that right nowOriginally Posted by Whatshoulditbe
since the beginning of time it's always been every man for himself
it's an entrepreneurial game
and i she already makes me sammiches; some of you are right though, i should order her to do that more often -

Seriously this. Although, you shouldn't have to be experienced with relationships to realize that if your significant other is not accepting of one of your biggest hobbies that its not going to work. -
I've had issues with the gf not liking poker but not the same since she didn't care about other people going broke. I told her that with a % of my winnings over a grand or around there I would buy her something and that was the end of it. Of course I never really cash big or else I wouldn't be making that deal :P I'm sure she wouldn't be so concerned about you taking other peoples money if part of it was to buy her a new purse.

We do the same things for people that actors, singers and other entertainers do, we help to provide entertainment. Without pro poker players there would be no top competititon for amateurs to test their "mettle" against and thus they'd get no entertainment value from poker. If playing poker is "immoral" because our job doesn't appear to help anyone else then so are the jobs of actor, pro baseball/football/basketball/etc player, professional singer, professional artist, professional ballet dancer, etc, etc, etc.
the funny thing about it is that i dont see what we are doing anything for anyone,
a docter got to cure poeple,
a farmer provides people with vegatables and wine,
some dudes clean other peoples houses for money -
