Edit: for hh, see the post below.
Well...I debated whether or not I should post this, as it might come over as disrespectful, and I dont mean it to be at all. Anyways, last night I was at a table with thebeat in the $162 mtt on stars. He started talking about how great he was, etc, so I decided to see if he was still in the super on party, which I was also in, as I have no problem observing good peoples play.
Anyways, as soon as I went to his table on the super, he had about 9bbs and someone raised to 4xbb who also had about 9bbs from mp. Beat pushed over him with KQ. I, for the life of me, can not see why you would ever push with a crappy hand like KQ when you have no fold equity at all. That play just boggled my mind. I would always wait for a better spot in this case, as you re only a coin flip and best and usually dominated.
About 15 minutes later I picked up AA in the mtt on stars. I raised to like 3xbb and beat called from the bb. I dont have the hh, but I think I had about 9bbs left. The flop was some low card flop like T82 or something like that. He checked, I pushed for tyhe last 6 bbs or so and he instacalled with 66...I couldnt believe it. From what I gather, the "correct" way to win these things must be to get all in with the worst hand and pray you draw out.
I just couldnt beleive that a "good" player would play either hand in such a horrible way. I ended up losing both of the mtts to 3 outers, which sucked. I would appreciate any comments on these plays and what I might be missing. Thanks a lot. -
Well, I dont really have enough information to go on with the descriptions you gave me, but on the first one TheBeat may have thought it was a blind steal and came over the top, knowing the guy had the odds to call yet also knowing KQ was the preflop best. Again, it's hard to examine the play without all the relevant information, but no doubt he made the right play. By the way, what did the guy end up having against his KQ? In your second example, a large % of the time you would have had 2 overs there with your push. The push makes you look like you whiffed the flop and you're trying to take the pot, so the call with 66 is a fairly reasonable play. Anyways, thats the way I see it, but then again, Im a moron... -Sok

Without being disrespectful, why don't you try looking at your own game first instead of commenting and asking about a successful player in a negative way? Or ask politely without being so negative if you want to learn something?
See, it's easy for me to criticize too! -
Does being the best player mean you make the ideal play 100% of the time? Is there room for error or deviation from the norm?
Also, doesn't feel good to donk it up and hit every now and again? Everyone's scared of the fish that hits. -
randomfrost, Fiery justice is also a very succesful player. I'd too like to know the reason for these seemingly bad calls....?
-
What did TheBeat say when you asked him about it?
-
I think sokpuppet explain the 66 play rather well.. the KQ is also explainable. It would be nicer to have the HH but from what you described, the beat had only 9x the BB, if you have read Harrington's books, that would give him an M of at most 6, if antes have kicked in then it is even less. EIther way he is growing increasingly desperate. It would seem to me that the beat felt the player who opened the pot probably had a pair of JJ or lower therefore making it a coin flip.
Players like the beat play to win tourneys, they dont care about cashing or just moving up a few spots in pay. They want to be in a position to get a top 3 or 4 finish to make som real money. Therefore i dont see his push with KQ as being such an unreasonable play. He figured it was a coin flip and decided to gamble. Either get a more reasonable stack or bust out. I dont think the beat was worried at all about the outcome when he pushed -
Ok...I found the one from the stars mtt but I couldnt get the party one, as I wasnt at his table. Looking back, I was WAY wrong about how I remembered it. It should be an even easier fold. Oh well...whayt do I know.

fwiw, I am quite sure trying to take coin flips is not the way to win a big mtt...esecially when you have trash like 66. If he paid attention to my play, he would know what I would never reraise like that with anything but a big hand...and that doesnt include AK. Looking back, I guess he almost has to call on the flop as I only have 4k left. I dont see ever calling the reraise preflop though. Sorry my horrible memory from my first post. The hand for party is as stated though, as it was very simple situation. Also, I am not some random fish for those of you who dont know me. I am usally 8 tabling $215 sngs on party or playing the step5s or step4highers whenever they run. I usually dont play mtts simply because they are much less profitable in my eyes conpared to sngs, although I usually play the big ones on the weekends. I was only doing these 2 to get some practice before Tunica in a few days. Anyways, I am still curious what this guy was thinking. -
Cant comment on the situations, because I dont remember them.
However, the 6,6 call may have been because he had no chips. I dont remember and would need more information then we have here.
As far as the K,Q, who knows maybe he had folded to me before and I was trying another bluff, again, I dont remember the situation.
All I can say is, I came in 23rd in the PS tournament which had 447 players, <SPAN> </SPAN>I just missed the money in the party one, which had 1400 players.
The only problem I have with this post is when he says I was talking about how good I am. I very seldom say anything to anyone. In fact I get pissed when others do. If I was talking chit, then someone started with me. I NEVER TALK CHIT. Anyone who has played with me can comment on this. -
Ok, I have A little more information. All I can say is..are you kidding me.
I got 22,000 in chips I put 4200 in preflop, you only had 4000 left. Flop comes 9,44. How can you ask me why I called???? I would of pushed If I was first to act.
you make yourself look foolish, asking the question.
Only real question was why I called your pre-flop raise. Again it has something to do with my stack size and image at the time. Maybe I thought you were a weak player who might check the
flop and I was going to bet and push you out. Don't remember. -
Well, TheBeat posted above, so he obviously can answer for himself.
But, I'd be curious to know if this scenario sounds reasonable because I'd surely do it:
You're on the bb w/8K. It is folded to me and I'm in position to steal w/66 and 21K in chips.
I raise. You reraise. I think "Ahh, he's got something and is protecting" I make the call for 2400 more, see a rag flop and only costing me another 4K to possibly take you out. And maybe not you per se, but why couldn't the bb have AK or AQ and be willing to gamble on that flop after investing half his stack? I'm calling.
I'd love to know if that is really a bad decision considering. -
LOL...timing is everything. His 2nd post wasn't there when I typed mine.
-
Well you did ssay it yourself...lol
"Why do I play only sngs? Because I suck at cash and mtts." -
I seriously want to thank TheBeat for responding to this post. When I read the initial post, I actually didnt see any problem with either of the plays, and when I read the hand history I REALLY didnt see any problem with the plays.
I do, however, appreciate TheBeat giving some insight as to why he played it that way (even though I would have done the same). Also, the initial poster was fairly polite about his critique, so he deserves an honorable mention for not posting something like "the beat is really a donk" or something like that.
In the first situation, there is no reason for pete to think he is dominated with his KQ, he is not likley to see a better hand before he runs out of bets...particularly if they were suited. In the second, he puts the other player (you) on two over cards. There is no reason for him to think his 66 isnt best. -
Fiery,
First of all, TheBeat hardly ever talks at the tables, and if he does, I have never heard him talk about how well he plays.
Secondly, if you are usually 8 tabling SNGs, I am sure you realize you don't always have the best reads on the others at your tables. Since TheBeat plays many at once, you should not criticize him for not paying attention to how you play.
Oh, and I have no problem with how he played 66.
Bax -
Aside from all this mumbo-jumbo, TheBeat may have the best beard in all of poker.
Any other "real" observations? -
I guess I am just trying to figure out the reason for going in with a weak hand like 66 here. I mean, even if I have AK, I still have outs. I could see playing something like JJ or QQ this way, but 66 just loses to too many hands. Also, I have no clue why he is so willing to get all in with it. Would he get all in on a Kxx or even Axx flop here? I just dont think blindly getting all in against an obvious strong hand is the best play here, especially when ywe both have fairly nice sized stacks. Then again, I could be wrong.
-
First of all, I was on the button. I can't count how many times a Big Blind raises me because he thinks I am raising from the button to steal the blinds. If a large stack (like I had) is on the button and raises my Big Blind, I raise him with a big ace everytime.
After the flop you don't have enought to get me off the hand.
I may play some questionable hands, but this hand is a no brainer. -
lol dont post it saying you dont mean it to be disrespectful when everyone knows you posted that to make him look bad.
and fromt he way thebeat described it, the way he played it was very logical to me -
why dont u look at the texture of the flop if u have ne high cards which is very possible that flop in now way helped u , if u have higher pocket he pays u off, he has the chips to do so, and if u have the two overs he doesnt mind a call with his edge its that simple juss shut up and learn something.
-
The one thing that I find amazing about this site, and really most poker forums, is that people who play low buyin games and look up to people who generally play well think that EVERY play a well known player makes is a great play, and that simply isnt the case. Anyways, I have no intrest in discussing this with some random guy who thinks he is good because he plays $10 mtts. Fwiw, I dont know many people bad enough to reraise 1/2 of their stack with a hand like AK or AJ or even 44 in that spot. All of those hands just get pushed preflop. The only hands I think it would be possible for me to have would be a big pair. As for him having chips to donk off with a crappy hand, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, but typical for a noob. Also, the texture of the board has nothing to do with the preflop action, which is what I was mainly intrested in. The call on the flop has to be made simply because I bet enough preflop to price him in. Hopefully you will learn to broaden your horizons and learn that even good people make mistakes.
I guess here is a summary of my complaints...Simply because you get a marginal hand, such as KQ or 66 in these spots doesnt mean you have to go broke or call off 2/3 of your stack simply because you get played back at. I see no reason why the KQ should have been played at all, simply because he has no fe, and I really see no reason to call preflop with the 66 knowing you are going to have to call on the flop, simply because I bet enough to price him in. Folding seems like the obvious answer to me in both cases. Neither of the hands are played for their value...they are played to make the other guy fold. -
I will say this "interesting" observation about TheBeat...
I saw him playing the $55rebuy on stars tonight and he doesn't rebuy. He plays the first hour at 1,500 chips the whole way, and plays it like a standard tourney.
I think anyone can tell you that playing rebuys should be about building as high as possible the first hour, thus having 3,000 to start and NOT playing the first hour like a standard tourney (tight).
I just thought it was weird. He didn't put himself in a better position to win it. -
well i am not the type of guy who says "so and so owns" or whatever but this has to be said

i only posted his results that coincide with your first cash....you're just making yourself just look really bad with this post man and you should consider and apology of some sort...the guy is perceived as good in addition to BEING GOOD...he obviously knows what he is doing being as in the same time span he has cashed in 72 MTT's while you have cashed in 9 MTT's...once again just apologize for being ignorant and this will all be over...not to mention these are only stats for stars which means that he is an infinite amount more cashes than you, therefore when ur talking about MTT strategy, he is not the right person to try to go at, because he is obviously doing something right...get your facts straight sir -
Can't wait til my play is bad enough to be mentioned on Pocket 5's
