  1. First off, I'm not quitting my day job. I have a new opportunity with a new schedule, and it still pays full benefits and pays for my grad school and pays right aroud 35,000 a year.

    Nice.

What I would like to do, with the new schedule, since i'm off on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and don't report to work until 1:00 T-F is try to carve out some time to really log some hours online and try and build up my online game.

    My strengths:

I'm an excellent live cash game player.

I'm a decent live tournament player.

I tend to look at the challenges associated with the game from an academic perspective. Part of this effort will involve devouring Sklansky/Harrington/etc.

    My glaring weaknesses:

I so far have had no success multi-tabling. Be it cash games, or tourneys. I even try to sign up for every FPP and free roll donkament, just to get used to multiple screens.

So, my questions for pros and semi pros alike....

    1. What books do y'all recommend I read.
    2. What equipment do I really need. Right now i have a 15" laptop and the same size monitor on my PC. I would like to build up my skillset until I can play 10 tables, half cash, half tourney/sng.
    3. What software will provide me the best information for my cash game.
    4. What kind of time commitment is involved with say, a 100+9 buy in tourney on stars.
    5. Is there anyway to qualify for any rakeback if I'm already a member of stars/ftp/bodog.
    6. What is the best way to accumulate player points, and what is the best way to spend them.

I'll be investing my cash bankroll into this project. The only good cash games in St. Louis are at Harrah's, and that is about a 30 minute drive from my current residence. I'm a five minute walk from work where I live, so I'd like to stay in the neighborhood, with the exception being trips to harrahs for larger buy in tournaments/good cash game days.
  2. 1. none, just the forums and try find some great players that you get along with that are willing to talk poker on AIM.

    2. That should get extremely confusing for you, if you already have trouble multi-tabling, you really need to play the same shit on every table. (SNG's, MTT's, or Cash Games, not an assortment)

    3. POkertracker

    4. 5.5+ hours to win it, probably 1.5-2 hours on avg for the basic TAG

    5. Create a new FTP account in another name

    6. SNG's in high volume, but that's basically out of the question untill you can multi-table. FPP SNG qualifiers assuming you don't count Moneymake coins, those things will be extremely valuable one day.
  3. Please talk to me like an idiot forum noob.

    TAG?

  4. OK then TAG= tight aggressive, and the Moneymaker coins thing was a joke.
  5. c'mon guys, help a newbie out!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I reccommend Harrington on Holdem, Vol 1 and 2. I think they are the best hold em books written.
  7. Get a larger screen, i bought a 22" LCD to upgrade from my 13" laptop screen or whatever it was and the difference is amazing
  8. 1. "Mathematics of Poker" maybe since you say you like the academic perspective
    2. Buy 2 24 inch Dell screens and learn to multi-table.

  9. I promise you that books will not help as much as discussing poker with succesfull players would.
  10. Definitely secondin' the Harrington on Hold'em. I'm looking for Super System atm. Also, talk to people here to get their perspective on things. The more you know, the better you'll fare.
  11. I think I need to start talking to successful players.
  12. 1. the full tilt startegy guide is very good for the average player, also read HOH I II and III thouroughly....a training site would be a great idea also and you would get even more information than just reading a book.
    2. i dont like playing more than 4 tables on a moniter, maybe you could squeeze six in, i dont recommend it. dont play different games as was already said, this would be very hard for even the best players...i wouldnt even play different types of cash games at once ex: stick to either 6max or full ring
3.once you get pokertracker also get poker ace HUD
    4. dont start one without having 6+ hrs to kill
    5. only by getting a new account
    6. the best way to spend them is qualifying to bigger tournies, dont worry about how to get them, they will come when you play-focus on winning

how much is your cash game bankroll? it should be over 5k if you plan on playing 100+9 tournies

    gl
  13. it should be 10k+ if you want to play 100s
  14. St. LouisNate,

Can you beat the 20-40/wkill or 30-60 at harrahs, or even the 1-2 at Ameristar. I'd drive 30 minutes to play in that 30-60 game any day of the week. It's an easy $1500. Of course the 1-2 NL at harrahs is the softest game I have ever played in. Why not go and know you are going to make money. Hell, I drive from Alton to play in those games.
  15. That's how I built my bankroll.

At this point it's a combination of boredom with those games, and a matter of wanting to stay in my neighborhood more. Instead of the hour drive (total round trip) and the three to four hour commitment to playing, I'd like to be able to come home, heat up some soup, play, go to bed.

  16. Easy to say..but without results..it's hard to get people with results to talk to you about poker much less even recognize your existence.
  17. Wrong thread yet wanted clarification....Just signed up for FTP, been regulated to stars for years. How does the rakeback work? Is there anything I need to do to make this happen? Appreciate
  18. Earn your points through SNGs or cash games. It's pretty much automatic.
  19. you should get another screen, I bought a 22" westinghouse at walmart for 200.00 bucks and now I put all my lobbys on my 17" laptop and put all my tables on the 22" screen and it works perfect for me, but you definately need a bigger monitor to look at
  20. do not create an account under another name on full tilt for rake back as suggested earlier in this thread. You will be able to play under this new account but when u come to withdraw money full tilt will close this account and transfer ur money to ur original account. Im afraid if u dont get rakeback already there is no legal way in which to start recieving it.
  21. Talk to HendonMob about rakeback.................they might be able to help
  22. harringtons books are mostly tourny but very informative Phil gordons books are an easy read Skalanskys books are the best he has books on tournys, basic hold em strategy. advanced cash game math. EV. implied odds you know boring shit but real informative it helped my cash game alot .definitely sklansky
