Villain seems like a complete idiot to me, so I'm not sure exactly what to make of his range when he pulls this move... What would you do if you had no specific reads but generally found the player to be substandard?

'JJ' is in a terrible place here. He either has 'AA' or 'KK' and is uzing the limp raise line to get some pay-off. Tricky play, maybe because he doen't like post flop play.
You didn't say what made you think he was a donkey? Has he shown some hopeless bluffs? All that being taken into consideration, donks do pick up hands some of the time.
This could be 'AKs' as well trying to take it down without a flop.
You're usually way behind or slightly ahead here. -
This is a preflop spot. You can assign villian a range, pokerstove equity calculations/f/e/profit ect... I think his limp/raise line puts his range somewhere around TT+, AQ+. Its obv going to be close. If this guy is a donk I would be inclined to fold here. He is most likely trying to extrapulate chips from you preflop since he realizes thats his best chance since his postflop skills aren't very good. Some people might think laying down JJ in a 6max game in this spot might be -EV or exploitable. I don't to be honest. Imo, you might be giving up alot of EV here by folding but I don't think this is exploitable. You can weigh out the pros and cons of folding but I think mucking it is the best play. In the longrun your going to be able to avoid these spots, and acccumulate chips in better situations. If you feel you have an edge/can outplay ppl at a 6handed table, pitch it and move on.
