I don't post much on here but I had an idea a few days ago, and reading Gator_Nutz post made up my mind to go ahead and create this topic. It might not get much of a response, but I thought it was a good idea so here goes. We read a lot about good plays, great laydowns and perfect bluffs that put you in position to win, and while it takes many good plays to win, it only takes one stupid play to lose. So I'm asking anyone who makes a bonehead play to knock them out of a tourney when they know it's the wrong thing to do to post their hand history from said hand and explain why they knew it was a terrible decision. I feel like this would go a long way towards improving anyones game because we all learn from our mistakes and maybe we can all learn from your mistakes.

No hand histories but the biggest leak in my game for the longest time was overplaying small - medium pocket pairs late in tourneys. On numerous occassions I would bash in a big pf raise and then have someone go all in over the top which I would then call because I couldn't accept they had me beat. I have largely erradicated this from my game but this cost me numerous final tables in the past. Particulary painful was when I busted from the pokerstars $500k event in 27th having been 2nd in chips 2 hands earlier because I wouldn't let go of 6,6(!) in the face of an all in reraise - the other guys had QQ.
Other stupid plays that have cost me have been lack of patience with a short stack, although having watched some of Todd's videos on RPT I am now much more patient.
anyways Ill be playing a lot this weekend so I'm sure Ill have many hand histories to contribute to this thread which demonstrate the full range of my stupidity! -
Ollie,
That's still the worst part of my game. PP between 9's and 5's are just killing me. Last night it was nines, the night before it was eights. It's one of those situations where you might have the best hand preflop, but if the flop comes, there's a good chance your middle pair is no good anymore. Does anyone have a solid stance on these type of hands??

I think i am starting to give to much credit to people. I have learned over the last few months if you dont have the best hand then dont put money in because if you dont put it in, you cant lose it. I know sounds easy, but i think it was my biggest weakness that would cost me to lose to many chips. Now i think i may have gone overboard. Last night 2 examples in sng's. Down to about 7 people and blinds were 50/100. I am second to act. I make it 300 to go with AQ. Player on button makes it 800. I am sitting on about 2500 chips and he has just over 2k. I figure if i raised in early and he is reraisign me then he has me covered so i show and fold. After i show AQ he shows KT (but you guessed it sooooted). I figured he had to have a better hand than that to go over the top of an early raise. too much credit i guess. I ended up taking 3rd.
next exampe was in the next SNG. Very tight table. blinds are at 75/150 and everyone is still alive. I am chip leader at about 2800 and again i have AQ. i raise preflop to 400 one player reraises but only to 650 so I called. Flop comes down Q9x. I check and he bets 300. I reraise to 1000. He goes all in. Now if i call and lose i only have 200 chips left. i think about it. Tight table, i have show in previous hand i only playing premium, but he seems tight too. I think he must have either AA or KK becuase why would he risk it with the Q on the board. Maybe he hit trips or maybe he even has KQ but do i want to risk all my chips to find out. i lay down and he shows JJ and says good laydown.
it was not the right move, but i thought for all my chips i better be safe. Now i went on to win it and he ended up out of the money and i made a note on him for the future. but my biggest problem has gone from not getting out to getting out to easy.
Later in a Mtt i was busted when i called with KJ soooted, board KJQ. i was short stacked at table UTG bet i went in with 2 pair and he called with pocket ladies for a set. But that just happens. -
Usually my bonehead plays come after I get irratated with a table. Yesterday I was trying to steal blinds in an MTT. However everytime I went to steal the same person called me and sometimes two or three people. Well usually when the blinds are that high it doesnt mean any callers and good stealing attempts so I am trying to build my stack with it and I kept getting called. It just drove me nuts with three people trying to see a flop with a raised pot. So what should have happened is for me to just wait for a strong hand and sting them all for trying to see a flop with a mediocre hand. However what happened is I went on super tilt and tried to bluff all in against aa on the river after a high straight and flush were on the board. Why did I try and bluff a calling station? Especially with AA and I knew he had it. And after my table image was obvious as an aggressive player. That was bonehead. But my bonehead plays are less and less these days because I have been controlling my emotions more and more and that means placing in many more tourneys.

Last night I was playing a UB 8k and right before the second break I had AQ in the sb and I raise to 600 (the blinds are 100 200 25 ante) and the BB pushed in...it is no secret that I hate AQ but i figure what are the chances they picked up a monster too? We got the money in and he has what else AK and I proceed to go vomit. That is the third time in the past few days AQ has killed me..twice my AQ ran into AK and once my AQ couldn't win a race with 22...2 frekain 2 how do you call an all in with 2 freakin 2..its un belivable. I did double up last night tho with AQ so maybe im just running a lil unlucky and it doesnt have to do with that hand.

AQ is teh suq. Last night i double up a donk who min raises on the button. i re-raise 3/4th his stack with AK in the bb and he goes all in and i call and he rivered the queen.. FF 20-25 minutes until i pick up AQ on the cutoff and the UTG has limped, folds to me and i raise to 775 , 675 more for him to call a pot of about 1000 and i only left myself 450 chips , he just flat calls, flop 9Qx and he checks to me, i bet the rest and he had pocket 9's.
F AQ. -
AQ and AJ have lost me more tournies than any other hand. I have learned to just lay them down in the face of a big raise or reraise. That helped a ton.
Middle PP used to kill me, and occasionally I still do get attached to TT and 99. I raise with them in position, and HATE to fold to a big push or reraise. I try to tell myself I am beat, and just save my money for a better spot. -
I consider my worse habit calling when I have a good starting hand that subsequent betting indicates it is not (or no longer) best. For example, the other day, early position goes 3x, and then there's a re-raise to 6X in front of my QQ. I decided to call, and when it gets around to the original raiser, he goes all-in AND the other re-raiser calls. Now if ever I've been warned that one of them (if not both) have AA or KK, this is it. But, no, I join the flop a trois. And, of course, first one had AA.
Or I recall when I had AA and got one caller to my pre-flop raise to see AKx flop. Although I made good sized continuation bet which was called, I could not resist calling to the other's all-in after 10 hit on turn (yea, QJ). I mean, how can I be beat after flopping a set of Aces? But I KNEW he had QJ, and just HAD to go out seeing it.
