Poker players who have had tournament success never look more like financial idiots than when they say something as stupid as Greg Raymer did in Poker After Dark. He revealed to the table that he played a golf match vs. Gavin Smith for 1 million dollars per hole. Whether this is true or not doesn't matter as much as the fact that he claimed to have done this and is owed 1 million by Gavin. Playing poker for big money is one thing, as over the long term, better players will win more, but playing a million per hole in golf is out of Raymer's net worth by a factor or at least 1000. Even Tiger Woods couldn't afford to play golf for a million a hole. I think perhaps Bill Gates and Warren Buffett could, but unless you have at least $10 billion in net worth, you just come across looking like a financial buffoon.

Wasn't this the deal that neither of them had to pay until their networth was over 100mill??
-
im pretty sure tiger could play golf for a million per hole and begin w nothing and have 10 mill at the end of the match
-
Yeah I bet Tiger would just be cringing at the thought of 1 million per hole, because so many people would have an edge against him.....
-
Sigh if you listened to what he said after it is basically a bet that is unlikely to have to be paid by either.
-
Raymer might be more loaded than you think... Still sounds like a lot at $1M per hole, but he's not gonna be struggling if he loses. I talked to him quite a bit in Bahamas about golf, and apparently he does a lot of this type of thing, albeit not for so much most of the time. Apparently he's pretty good at finding an edge...
-
It doesn't even matter if Tiger can afford it or not, who's going to play Tiger for 1 mill per hole and who could afford it that could realistically beat him?
-
Tiger snap-calls that bet.
-
Methinks your hyperbole bit you in the ass. Tiger's very very rich and very very good.
-
Yes he does.... and he has more than enough to play 1 mil a hole. Who in their right mind though play Tiger for a mil a hole?
-
..........i remember this episode...
it was 10000000% clear that Raymer was joking. -
also please dont forget, raymer was an accountant before his job as a professional poker player got into the way, idk about you guys, but by my experience i dont know many accountants who are bad w money

If by Raymer you mean Moneymaker, then I disagree with your point, Moneymaker is horrible with money and I have no knowledge about how he handles his money either.
Raymer was some kind of patent attorney or something. -
didnt see the episode, not even sure if story is true, but lol at needing 10 billion to be within your roll to play. its not like this is their normal game and they need X amount of buyins. they are shot taking, and if one got crushed he would more than likely never play at these stakes again.
-
Wait, you mean to tell me that you aren't using proper BR management in your $million per hole gold matches?
Also, a little perspective people, there's a lot more variance in tournament poker than HU golf matches with Gavin Smith imo. -
LOL@tiger woods not being able to play for 1 mil per hole....... OP really ru that stupid???? Tiger could play for 10 mil/hole......cuz hes got the money and............wait for it....................he the fucking best golfer on the planet.... oooooo I dont watch poker after dark but raymer was prolly joking, lease stop posting immed if your going to be ...........

Tiger Woods has one 5 tourneys in a row....endorsements out the wazoo...won 13 majors, has won like 60 something tourneys altogether....played for 10yrs as a pro....1 mill per hole? Unless Tiger is playing in snow and the other dude is playing on crystal clear day I'd think he'd take the 18 mill bet. And that's IF he lost every hole....ever had ur opponent drawing dead? The only way he loses is if he happens to play bad that day, and his opponent somehow kills. I think Tiger would take the edge where no luck is really involved.
