Taking a shot/is AJ a calling hand blind v. blind?

    Longish Story (if you don't want to read skip down to where it says Hand): I had a nice Sat. and won 2 $109 seats on Bodog. I keep a limited amt. on just a few sites, and usually cash out when I get it to 400-500 bucks just to spend on bills or something for the kids. My last cashout about 45 days ago I used to buy my daughter some new golf clubs, she's getting pretty good and had outgrown the old ones.

    Anyway, point of all that is that I obv. don't keep enough online to EVER play a hundred-dollar tourney, even if I won 2 seats. Better for me to just play 20 $10 tourneys, however I felt like I was playing pretty good lately, I was fresh, so I decided to take a shot at the Bodog $109 20k. 144 entered, lots of regulars and big names (Thayer, Dyzalot, alcarmo, rusostreet, rushstreet, etc.) so I wasn't intimidated but def. knew I had to bring my a-game and then get really lucky. Even then, if I lose I lose, I still have the other 109 in T$. Poker is my part-time hobby/2nd job so this isn't a real bankroll I'm risking.

    I got lucky on an early hand and doubled up to 6k (starting stack 3k) on a hand I didn't play particularly well but got lucky on the river. After that, I played what I consider relatively well and built it up to 12.5k when the avg. was around 7.5.

    Hand: $109 buy in, $20k guarantee on Bodog. Two times previously it had folded to the sb when I was the big and he had raised 4-5x, both times I had come over the top all in and he folded (not a name player, seemed to just be hanging around). Now he was around 5k at this pt., I am at 12.5k, blinds are 300/600, and I believed the next time he had a marginal hand b v. b he would just shove. So it folds to him, and he does just that. I have AJo, and I really believe I am crushing his range here, and that anything better than AJ he just makes the standard raise (or even limps) hoping I come over the top one more time. If it matters to anyone there are about 50 players left and 18 places pay.

    So, do you call with AJ in this spot?

    This is a very, very easy call. Honestly if you have to ask this question then it is clear that this tourney was too big of a buy-in for you. I'm sure that you realize that this is a snap call, but the fact that you were playing a big buy-in tourney has clouded your judgement and you think that because the buy-in is bigger that you need to play more careful. This is not true, it is still just a poker tournament and no matter what the buy-in you need to call 9 big blind shoves from the small blind with hands much weaker than AJ. Obviously he had AK and you lost, ul gg.

    Yes I would make that call based on past history and his over shove.

    Hmmm wondering what makes you think this is AK. Even short-stacked as he is I think he would've gotten (what he thought was) trickier with a hand that strong.

    Yeah, this was definitely way bigger than my average $3 buy in, but honestly once I was in it, it was obvious that I was surrounded by plenty of fellow donks. Best as I could tell, about half of the field (you can include me if you want) was pretty subpar. Much of the other half was full of very, very good players also.

    One thing I don't think is true is that I tightened up due to the buy in. I played my normal game, making sure not to take some iffy chances with hands OOP that I might make in micro tourneys b/c you can get away with more stuff in those, so if anything I think I played better than I normally would. I did make 2 mistakes not making value bets on the river which probably cost me being at 15k instead of 12.5k going into the hand in question, but meh that kind of stuff happens all the time.

    In any event, thanks for the feedback. I'll post results later on if you're interested.

    Snap calling with AJ in this spot. There's enough money in the pot pre that he has to be shoving a ton of hands here.

    RESULTS:

    I did snap call, I had already made up my mind that pretty much no matter how the SB played it, I was shoving if they didn't (if it folded to him of course). SB showed K8, flop came with a King but also all clubs, and I was holding the Ac. Unfortunately an ace or a club never came and I was down to 7.5k and below the tourney avg instead of 17.5k just like that.

    Rest of tourney, I had one ill-fated steal attempt from the cutoff go wrong when alcarmo (seated directly to my left for most of the tourn.) on the button took it away from me with an all in on the turn after flatting me pre and post flop when I c-bet with nothing. Down to 4k, cutoff again at 400/800 and blinds about to go up, shoved with A3c and the small blind has JJ, out in 39th.

    You cant be results oriented here, you need to make that call every time, villan has less than 10 BBs and he should be shoving a very wide range of hands since the blinds and antes, if there are any, will add a decent percentage to his stack. You obv got it in good and he sucked out, cant do shit about that, be happy you got your money in good and dont second guess calling here.
