I don't know how many of you have friends that you play with that have no idea what their doing but I play a couple of times a week with 4 or 5 friends that don't have a clue.
Sometimes I'll try to help them, or give them advice but it seems like I'm trying to explain rocket science to someone that still uses a sling shot. It seems like my advice goes right over their heads and they can't grasp it.
I got into a huge argument with one of them yesterday when he was talking about a hand he played in a tournament. He had KJ and the flop came King high he bet and got raised all-in. After thinking about it he throws his hand away and asks the dealer if they can rabbit hunt. His opponent turns over KQ so he was dominated and drawing slim, they rabbit hunt and the turn and river are both Jacks and he'd of made a full house.
He tells me how pissed he was, he had to get up from the table and walk around to cool off. When telling this story he's still pissed he folded that hand.
I try to explain to him how it doesn't matter what would of came on the turn and river. Tell him that it's stupid to rabbit hunt because it's pointless, when your opponent showed you KQ you should be happy that you made a good lay down.
He can't grasp this and he keeps arguing that he'd of made a full house and probably would of been chip leader of the tournament. I argue with him for like a half hour and he can't grasp what I'm telling him, it just goes over his head.
These situations come up all the time and I try to explain it to them but it seems pointless. These guys are my friends and I don't play with them 100% of the time so I'd like to see them be successful.
I feel like I'm just beating my head against the wall even trying to help these guys out. Wonder if anybody else out there are ever in similar situation with friends? Do you just keep your mouth shut? You just let them keep thinking the way they think and let them just play the way they play?
It feels like trying to help an alchoholic, you can only help the ones that want help. -

Sounds like the story of my recreational poker life. I usually wait awhile and try to scope out who would actually want to become better and is willing to learn. Then I will try once with each person. After that first time, I can tell if they are interested in learning, or are like your friend. Most are like your friend, and I take their money and we all have fun doing it. Maybe 10% want to learn, and after a quick tip that they execute profitably, they then tend to come to me asking "did I play this right?"
Once they use results-oriented thinking in their arguments with you, you know you can stop trying. -
I just try to avoid talking legit poker with the average person. You can pretty much tell within the first minute of talking with someone if they know what they're talking about at all.
Most of the time they're lying. Its something like "Oh yeah, I'm probably break even" Or "I've won a few tournaments".
When they tell you they won or cashed in a bar tournament and brag about it makes me want to puke....
