  1. I've learned a lot from poker, in fact, more than I've learned from most any other aspect of my life. Like life it takes a more or less conservative overall approach without ever overextending your resources while seeking the most oppurtune moments to make aggressive calculated decisions and ultimately being prepared to fail based on the many elements one simply can't control. But in the end, with a positive winning attitude and with the ultimate goal to succeed it is very hard to fail.
I start a new job Monday morning and plan on taking everything I've learned from poker into this new phase of my life. I am grateful that I found this game and the lessons I've learned from it and will never be able to go any extented period of time without some poker in my life. It truly is an art and I believe anyone who has the disiplined approach to beating it will succeed in almost anything.
I didn't need to write this, and I tried to keep it short, but thought I'd give back a little to a game that has given me so much.
    Good luck @ the tables!
    -Matt

  2. Good luck!!! Believe it or not, I sweat you quite a bit on Bodog trying to pick up pointers. Not sure if it's helped, but I'm certain that it hasn't hurt.
  3. No doubt, agreed. Cold 4bet that job all day gotz, glgl.

  4. Best of luck, Matt! Keep on crushing life and the occasional game or two. Does wonders for me to see someone staying as chin-up as you do. You have my #. Don't make yourself scarce.
  5. Very nice post.

Best of luck in whatever is next, I agree the skillset learned from poker is most likely going to be applicable in whatever 'the next step is.

  6. Hey, this is something that is rarely ever talked about. We'll see 5 posts a week on the guy going pro. We'll see 5 posts a week on the guy who goes broke, and it crushes his family/friends lifestyle, through addiction. Yet, I bet there are hundreds of stories of guys using sensible skills from poker (it's one of the best ways to learn patience short of having kids), of people using poker skills to parlay them into real world successes.

Thank you for sharing. I wish this is something that would get 200 posts and be alive 3 days from now.

I'm too stupid to understand this... but let's start binkin tournaments this week to go along with that new steady income
  8. Nice post, I totally agree, believe poker (while one may let it become a real negative, like above post mentioned) can really sharpen a lot of skills and give a new lens through which to view some situations. Good luck sir, thanks for the post.

  9. good luck....... poker will be fun again and less of a mind raping grind
  10. Nice post! The one thing I can be sure poker has helped me with is emotionally detaching myself (as much as possible) from results beyond my control. If you can take this into any real life situation, along with the determination and competitive factor it takes to be a good poker player, you will undoubtedly find success.

  11. I say "poker is life" all the time, my wife rolls her eyes lol.

  13. GL Ballz. if you play as tough at work as you have at teh tables you'll do just fine.

Just don't berate the boss for making a bad call and doubting your findings ;)

    unless it's re-buys

seriously though, great post, and i couldn't agree more. i know i've built life skills through poker. when you can stay off tilt, you learn to apply that to other situations, and you're always looking for an edge and always running +EV scenarios on everything you encounter.

i'm just going to keep going. i was out of work for an extended period, and spent all my time playing poker. now i've been working again for the past two months, and my mind was sharper when i returned. part of my job involves making sales calls, and i looked at the dynamics of one particular business, and thought about thier size, location, executive title, revenue, and then i thought, "hmmm...I've called on businesses like this before. they take a lot of time, the deals almost never close, but when they do, it's usually pretty big...hmm..... i've been in this spot before. sounds like a bad draw. i don't think i have the implied odds to call on this business. sure, i could land a nice account, but i'd be better off folding pre- and finding a better opportunity that's locally owned." without poker i probably level myself into believing i should chase this large account instead picking a better spot.
