Being a successful poker player you obv love both the game and the money. But I've been thinking, which one do you love more? Which one keeps you working harder and eager for more day in and day out?
If you asked that question to 10,000 winning players and they gave you their honest answer in percentages (70%money/ 30%game or vis versa), and you averaged out the majority game lovers and majority money lovers, which side would have the bigger winners?(remember we're only talking about winning players here)
IMO the money lovers are the biggest winners but the game lovers are the better players(as a majority). This is just a guess but I believe that alot of mid-stakes grinders that have been winning at this game for years (whether it be at MTT, STT, CashGames, or ALLoftheABOVE) are mostly lacking some more love for the money, which seperates them from from the Top Tier players.
Thoughts? -
IMO you need a love for both...no check that...passion for the game and a fire that burns inside to win A competitive yearning.
Sounds good to me :) -
not successfull but my take would be if you love the cash can you really play your best? Those that win aren't afraid to get their chips in the middle near the bubble because they try to win instead of folding past the bubble.
I never really understood those that said they wanted the braclete more than the cash, but I guess in order to get the cash you cant be afraid to not get it....if that makes sense. -
Cash comes and goes, the bracelet is forever maybe?
Crowning achievement as it were? -
I think you need both, but I would guess the more successful people love the game more than the money. The money needs to be important so it keeps your interest, but not so important that it affects your decisions.
I play much more for the competitiveness and feeling I get from a victory. The money is good, but I would always choose a bracelet and 2nd place money over first place money with no real victory. -
I think you need to replace the game with the fame
-
You dont necessarily have to love either, you just gotta strive to be the best at the game. The goal is to become number one or pefect, love for the game doesnt hurt though.
-
I think thats a hard question to answer sometimes because the two are so innertwined(I think I spelled that right). Money is the lifeblood of poker. Without it the game sort of loses its meaning IMO. You can play for fun without it, but in my experience it loses a lot its appeal without that risk involved and that battle of wits that money creates in the game. How much are you willing to risk? Without money, its always nothing. JMO.

If I make enough money to take care of my family for the rest of our lives, I'd play very little poker. I already spent too many hours all by myself.
Not saying I don't love the game though, but I feel in debt with my close ones timewise. -
I actually shouldve worded my questions more clearly. I think winning players obv love both aspects to continue to play and succeed. What I want to know is which one do you love more and how much. Example: Me, I'd say I do it 60% for money and 40% for the game/competition. So I'd fall slightly into the majority money lovers group. (Remember, love for the game has nothing to do w/ skill level) When someone like Ivey or Doyle sits down to play some 500-1k or 2k-4k are they more 70%m/30%g or 80%m/20%g even? Money is the overall goal, the end result. Do winning players just need to want it more to win it more?

I want to be better at the game, so I can eventually make more money, but also for the personal satisfaction of being good at what I do.
but since im such a bankroll nit, I probably dont have as much a love for money as I need to ever get to the point I want to. The fact that every once in a while I'll enter a freeroll and try and play my A game is probably enough evidence that I love the game more than the money, and if I ever made a life changing score, I'd probably just live off it and still play low and mid stakes until I built my roll up high enough to play high -
love playing few Mtts with a few beers after working hard all week, and dreaming one day that I may donkey myself to Ft of the sun million ! But I love the game, but i don't like the game without money at stake.

"I do it for tha looooove of Monnnaaayyyyy" -BT&H
if it weren't for money, i wouldn't play another hand of poker i don't think. i like playing only because i like winning only because that winning gets me money. I'm competitive, but trying there's too much luck in this game to get all worked up about trying to get first place and not being satisfied if you don't. I'll save all that competitiveness for the racquetball court.
