  1. OK, I want your opinions, because most of you are far better than I...

I've found that a lot of times in tournaments, I am getting knocked out in tournaments with coin flip situations. Now this isn't a bad beat post, this isn't a conspiracy theorist post, I just need some advice.

For example, in a tournament tonight, I had 55 on the button...I raised to 2500 or so with 55(everyone had folded around to me). Guy with a big stack in the BB pushed all in. Now I KNEW he had 2 overs, and I KNEW he didn't have an overpair. I ended up calling, he had KTs, and his ten hit.

Now...I had plenty of chips to maneuver with, even though he had more than I. But it was right before the cash in the tournament, and since I knew I had him marginally beat, I decided to go for it.

Is this a bad play? Should I try to reduce the number of flips? Maybe I should have limped with 5's pf, he checks more than likely, then examine the flop?

I just find myself losing a lot of these situations, and so I'm wondering what your advice might be.
  2. Why couldn't he have 77? How can you be so sure?
  3. The Thing that's been bothering my lately:

But seriously, coinflips are a part of mtt play, you need to win your fair share to win a tourney. The key is having enough chips to sustain losing a race, and still being a major factor in the tournament.

EDIT: Wow, I have no idea how to make that pic show up.

  4. Well I guess theoretically he could. But I'd been playing with the guy for a while on the same table, and even though you're right, he could have had it, I never really had the feeling that he did have an overpair.

Then again, I say that, but that's when maniacs wake up with aces =P

  5. Races suck. Unless you win a bunch in a row in the same tourney.

Seriously though, they are a part of MTTs and just some of the luck factor on any given day. You made a good call with the 55 since you were a slight favourite and getting a good price once you already raised.. but sometimes you just need to get lucky and have those hands hold up.

  6. these situations are a double edged sword.

You have to play these and win these, but at the same time fold to them in oder to just wait for better positions.

If you're him and you lose its a good play, because you're initiating the action.

If you have 55 then you're getting someone to call off their chips with KT
If you have KT then you're getting someone to call off thier chips with 55

you also win when they fold. When you hold up or out draw.

The point is .. why would you want to call off your chips. Sometimes a person makes a play before you even get a chance too and if its a significant amount of your chips, you are better off folding and waiting for a better spot.

In other words First in Vigor (sp) ..

This changes the dynamic of the play, but regardless you are better off folding and not taking these races... Unless you have too ... if you can fold, just wait for a better spot...
  7. If you wanna risk a coinflip at stars...just make sure you have more chips than the other guy. The bigger stack is always a 90% favorite in any coinflip situation.
