  1. I read through some of the people bashing Gidders for becoming a pay site. I think it is great what he is doing. It sounds like he has a very focused strategy (teaching winning, low-limit poker), and there is definitely a market out there for that. I don't think anyone should have anything negative to say about that, He doesn't owe people anything... it really sounds like he has helped a lot of people.

Gidders, I commend you taking the initiative to go out and try to do something that many people wouldn't have the guts to do. Trust me, I know from experience that it isn't easy.

Good luck and I'll close by saying to the people that think $11 month is too expensive...if you learn one or two things per month from Gidders' website it will more than make up for the price. Poker is a game that if you don't keep learning you will fall behind, and $11/month is hardly anything to pay for something that sounds like it could be of great value.

  2. Yet another example of why I recently joined cardrunners.com

    Like Pocketfives.com, it's a 1st class site run by 1st class people.

  3. Taylor,

Thank you very much for posting this - it really means a lot coming from an accomplished player such as yourself.

I took a chance by doing something I wanted to do, and whether it succeeds or fails is irrelevant to me at this point. I am just happy that I did it in the first place. I hope if nothing else, people can take that into consideration - whether or not to decide to join the site.

Thanks again for the support, GP - you fuckin' own, man.

  5. Cardrunners should sign gidders to a 5.7 Million dollar deal.
  6. I think you have to do it, but I doubt many people will join a site by a player who seems very unaccomplished.
  7. Empire, all I've seen from your posts are negativity backed with nothing but shallow opinions. Seems like you've either got a jealousy issue that needs to be looked at or you need to go find another forum to post on. P5's is constantly being degraded by the negativity that flows through it.
  8. I want to clarify that my replies to previous post were in no way bashing gidders. I try to remain positive as much as possible. My only point was that it should have been clear the site was not going to remain a free service. There was no need for advertisements in the prime ad space on P5's if there was no intention of charging. It was pretty obvious to me that the charges were coming in the future.

I believe this was the reason this admittedly useful site and service received flak was because of the series of events leading up to it becoming a pay-for-service site and not free.

When cardrunners was launched you guys were up front from it's inception that it was coming and people would be able to purchase memberships.

gidders.com on the otherhand seemed to back into this pay status while not representing up front that this was the end goal.

People don't like feeling like they were mislead, and that is how some people felt (whether justified or not) This alone was the reason for the backlash.

Personally I wish gidders all the best. He seems to have valuable insight to offer a certain segment of the poker playing community. Godspeed young man, Godspeed..
  9. I don't think anyone including Gidders himself foresaw the amount of demand his material would recieve. I think at the point in time the bandwidth consumption and the hours put into the site were begging the question, "why am I doing this for free?". I believe his intention were pure and he'll do well even now seeing that the trust and respect Gidders gained on P5's will bring to him a loyal clientel. I admire anyone who is willing to take time and effort in helping others. As always Gidders...Good luck.
  10. Ya but you've got to consider some other elements as well. 1. there are numerous other alternatives that would allow him to pay for the site, i.e. securing ads.

    2. if he was worried about getting so much attention that he couldn't pay for it anymore, why was he himself advertising the site? I saw adds for gidders.com, so he obviously seeking many members.

It seems as if the shift to a paying format was inevitable, and perhaps people feel they were sold out because this was not mentioned beforehand.

If the membership idea fails (i.e. no one wants to pay) then there are other avenues he could pursue. If pocket 5s and similar sites can afford to stay open without membership fees and still make a profit (which I'm convinced they do) then I'm sure gidders can pursue similar avenues as well.
  11. Cal and Adam please correct me if I'm wrong BUT...

Gidders is offering a service that takes not only time but actual proven talent to make his services plausable and marketable. P5's offers a service to the community by allowing them to exchange words and build an even more tight knit community however the only real time consumption is in the maintenance and administrative. The advertising on P5's is much more appealing to the poker sites due to the enormous traffic. Advertisers will spend much more to advertise on P5 than www.gidders.com therefor making P5 not only the money to pay for the site but profitable as well. Gidders is offering a talent and the patience to help people reach their goals just like any sports teacher or school tutor. While I think the site might have been misleading I believe everyone can thank Gidders for the preview and move on whether continuing to view the site or taking what they learned for free and using it.
  12. great post tc. and after reading empire's thoughts i'd like to say that SwiftAces took the words right out of my mouth.

  13. Swift,

I don't disagree with you that the sites are dissimilar in many ways. However, I guess my point was that about anything you could obtain on gidders.com you could obtain via the pocket 5's community (via blogs, asking others for video, advice, etc). I'm not bashing him, just as an impartial person, examining the issue from a business perspective, I don't see people paying to get the information there.

It's an informed opinion based upon observation and logic.

Gidders owes no duty to provide free material to anyone, it was his choice, and he is free to withdraw at any time (which he has chosen to do).

I don't agree however that he failed to forsee, or at least failed to anticipate such growth. If he wanted to keep it simple (and ultimately free) he would not have advertised. I think this is a fair assumption. I think the only "beef" that anyone might have is the fact that its hard to have something taken away that was once given (i.e. prohibition). If he had said from the begining that he would ultimately charge if the site was popular enough, or that this was a trial run, I think people would be less likely to feel "mislead" or "sold out".

Once you get used to something being free that doesn't seem to have any indication that it will be anything other than free, its hard to let go. We bitch about price increases, but the bottom line is that if its something we need or desire, we will get it anyway.

    Gidders,
I wish you the best in your endeavor. I am sure your hard work will pay off.
  14. You're my boy BLUE!!!
