The guy was short stacked already, is it standard to shove on the flop? Was he going to call anyways with his gutshot? Any advice on how I should have played it different or was he going to play strong no matter what. -
I know it's not part of your question, but I would have raised to about $160 pre. I might not have shoved on the flop, but I would have put in for a raise. Anyone with Qx will probably come along. You also might get some bad draws, but if they hit, oh well. At least you got your money in good.

Pre flop: I would like to iso the limper here in position. To do so id bet 160-220. Most likely you'll end up heads up vs the limper or you'll take the pot down right there.
On the flop I would bet out 2/3- pot. Do not be scared to bet your hands.
It is not a standard shove on the flop. Its not often we actually make real hands so when you do bet them for value.
If you would have jammed he would've never called you with a gut shot. At the same time if you jam you'll never build a pot. -
Agree with the responders about raising pre-flop.
I'd also be raising the flop most of the time, to 200 or so (as played). There are a fair amount of drawing hands which catch some of this board, and letting them catch up for a min-bet, when they'll call off more to draw, is a mistake. Definitely don't shove the flop with effective stacks of almost 40 BB. Losing a lot of value that way.
Good discipline in just calling the turn and river when the draws get there.
