at 4:00, shortstack on the button pushes 57, a call by a2, then dutch reraises with qj. pretty much everything i have been taught says you should just call and check down to knock him out and increase equity.
then again... dutch is a genious and this is probably over my head stuff. do any of you guys know why he did this? -
read that the flat caller was weak, so he iso'd to try to win the whole pot with pretty good odds.
checking down to knock someone out is super over rated

The a2 just added dead money to the pot giving him very generous odds even if he is behind shortstack.

his thinking here would be to accumulate chips, not knock out a player. he probly felt weakness and could get the A2 caller to fold and have good odds to draw to the dead money in the pot or have the best hand/flip.

Didn't watch the hand, but from the described situation.
Dutch's odds against a short stack pusher and A2 (for the pot) are far lower than if he is heads up. From Dutch's spot, that percentage better is worth it if he loses to the HU guy (if he loses to him, he would have lost anyway), as opposed to having an extra person out of the tournament.
Checking down is really advisable when your likely behind, so bluffing gets you nothing anyway (dry side pot, you bluff, and your a mile behind, you win nothing, but you can lose more). -
This ^^^^^^^^. I get berated all the time for people wanting to move up or knock so-and-so out and I'm like wtf people, I play for chips, not to help you get more money. BUT, I usually fk myself over like yesterday some dude just flats TT (trust me, it wasn't a set up cuz this dude didn't have a clue), and I shove a8o and of course he FINALLY shoves his chips in....this tilts me like none other.

its kinda funny now that i think about it. it makes the most sense yet it seems like every book you read and every player you face thinks otherwise.
