  1. Hey guys,
I just found this site and it looks like a great place to pick up some good info on poker. I am going to atlantic city to play in my first live event in September and was wondering what to expect. I am going to the Taj on Sep. 19th to play in the $340 NL Tourny. Anyone know how many people I should expect and what kind of structure this tourny should have? How long should this tourny last? Any tips for a rookie would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ernie
  2. I just tried to google it and couldnt find anything, is this the US POker Championship you are asking about, because I thought that was a 10k buy in, or are you asking about a normal $340 tourny at the Taj? Im a little confused.
  3. That's one of the preliminary events at the USPC. Here are some of the figures from last year's $300 NL tourney. It looks like they paid 27 people out of 700+ entrants. It also looks like it's a one day tourney which means you don't get a lot of chips and the blinds/antes would have to escalate quickly to be able to get from 723 people to the winner in one day.

  4. US Poker Championship is at the Taj Mahal in AC and runs from Sep. 18th - Oct. 7th. Main event begins on Oct. 3rd. I am playing in the second event on Sep. 19th which is a $300+40 NL event. Just trying to get my feet wet playing live poker, not to mention I don't have the bankroll for the main event.

  5. Newman, almost every major tournament has a bunch of preliminary tournaments leading up to it, so he is talking about one of those...

Silence, I played in one of the $300+40's in last year's US Poker Championships, there was a little over 700 entrants in the one I played. I would say that the ones on a Friday or weekend will have a bigger field, and the other weekday ones might have 500 or so. If I recall correctly you start w/ 5000 chips, 25/50 blinds, and the blinds increase every 20 minutes I think. Don't quote me on that but that is their general structure for the most part. I couldn't tell you how long it will last, I went out in the third hour when my AA went down in flames all-in preflop against AJs on a Q74 rainbow flop. I would imagine though it will go past midnight if it starts at 11 am..
  6. Itquick, I played in the one w/ 723 entrants and it didn't pay only 27 places, that's only what is reported on Cardplayer. I think it payed more like 63 if I remember correctly, the 27 places reported on the Cardplayer site only account for a little over $180k when there was $216k or so in the pot.
  7. The United States Poker Championship is a great series, and despite the fact that they are all 1 day events, you actually get quite a bit of play. The levels are usually 30 minutes. However, I did win one of these events, and it took 15.5 hours (dinner break included). prepare for a long ass day if you want to go deep.
