how many hands would you need to play before getting close to your true win rate, i.e. 5/10nl?? i've had little experience in no limit cash games until recently and am running well since i've started

i'd say around 10k hands is about right to get an idea of where youre heading. wont be perfect but if youre losing over 10k hands you should definitely look into the database and figure out where youre bleeding.

dont be a puss, u know whether ur a winner or not. prolly within 1k hands.

Actually, something around 90% of the poker players i know think they're good players. The ones who have lost money....think they're good players that have just been unlucky, take too many bad beats, etc.... That's the beauty of stats....they don't lie. You do need to build up quite a hand history though to have a good idea. I agree with the poster who said you can start to plug some leaks after 10k hands, but I'd say the number is more like 50-100k before you can have a relatively small margin of error on your long term profitability.

i haven't been using pokertracker, since i recently moved and don't have the other computer set up, but i am 3 tabling, and have about 70 hours logged, up 17 buyins playing 5/10nl, but i play a very aggresive game so i would think there is some more variance than other players are experiencing. i'll give it a couple more weeks

100k+ hands.
5/10 is pretty swingy alreayd, and more so if you play LAG.
I know I've gone on 30k+ hand bad runs, and had 5k hands where I made a ton. -
Well, given your estimated numbers, you can figure out an approximate bb/100. You said you have about 70 hours logged, 3 tabling and up 17k. We'll just use 90 hands/hour as the approximate hands/hour.
3 tables x 70 hours= 210 hours
210h x 90 hands = 18,900 hands
+1700 bb for 18,900= 8.99bb/100
These should be somewhat close to what your actual numbers are, hope this helps. -
thanks
