There has been a lot of dicussion on the topic of variance, heaters, downswings etc etc. Was just wondering which variance annoys you the most and why? This is just my opinion:
MTTs:
Negatives- Variance is massive. Some days you can make it deep in a lot of tourenys and bust every one running kk into aa, set into rivered flush etc etc. Downswings are so harsh and you basically lose a lot of focus and desire.
Positives- While variance plays such a great role larger ROIs are attainable in MTTs. Therefore over a long period of time one can still be a winning player. A player who ROIs around 80% may ROI 20% over a two month period and still bring in the bread. Also heaters are amazing.
SNGs:
Negatives- While variance is less, high ROIs are'nt realistically attainable over a long time period. Even the top online grinders ROI around 8-20% in SNGs. Therefore a downswing in variance is a bitch because even a winning player is likely to lose/only breakeven and that doesn't help at all.
Positives- Variance is much less than MTTs. Heaters/Normal periods should bring in good consistent return.
Cash:
Negatives- Swings can really dent your roll. Cash players often don't roll themselves as comfortably as they should and therefore losing 3 buyins in rapid time can certainly affect bankroll and morale.
Positives: In a bad period if you play at lower limits vs weak opponents it is still possible to pick up enough small pots and outplay terrible fish to minimise damage during a downswing. Heaters are unbeleivable vs the same type of opposition.
Just wondering about your thoughts??? Personally a downswing in MTTs gets me thinking "What the hell do I have to do to even get in the cash??? This is getting ridiculous." But because a high ROI in general is attainable I don't mind the variance too much.
SNG variance pisses me off. I'm not that great at SNGs anyways but it is so hard to make money in SNGs that it is just a fuck grinding out so many to hit a downswing and watch all your hard work go to custard.
Cash games. I don't mind variance in cash games too much. If I start to feel tilty I just throw in the towel for the day and comeback. If I keep enduring bad variance I do the same and keep a level head until things turn around. Because players are pretty terrible I find it is possible to minimise damage during downswings and really capitalise on upswings.
Just wondering what you guys think?? This could be totally wrong so really want your opinions -
Variance is just an element of the game. I think its redundant to discuss which form of it we hate the most.
You did bring up a good point about cash games, and that you can sit out whenever you want. In that sense I agree that cash game 'variance' is the easiest to control, but on the other side you can lose a lot more money in one hand. -
cash games cause u always lose

mtt's for sure. if youre an above average player, but no elite, the downswings can really make you feel like your game is just one big leak and you just think like the tourney world has passed you by. then you win one, and feel like you've got it all figured out again, and then go another extended period without even cashing, or without a deep finish

altho i hate all downswings/variance, each one hurts in its own way.
mtts - already explained by downbylaw
sngs - you grind ur ass off and one downswing can destroy a entire session (altho this one reason like sngs cause it can also go in the reverse order just as quickly)
cash - 1 bad session can take a while to get back -
agree^^

^^^^^^^^^ well said. i play sngs cause i think i got a style that can get a 6-10 percent roi. thing that sucks is i used to play the 16s and lose 10 in a row. meh 150 bucks. now lose ten in a row in the 60s. fuck 6 bills. best way is after a few losing sessions in cash/mtt/sng is get the hand history and go over everything and see if you couldve played it different.
my two cents

i hate SNGs. not worth the time for me, when im on a heater, i can win like 4, and still make less than i can in like 2-3 hours on a cash table, or 3-4 hours in a MTT. however, MTTs piss me off because, as you said, you can play excellently, and one cooler puts your dick in the dirt.
now cash games are the only way to make money and not go fucking crazy... if youre on a downswing, all it takes is a little bit of discipline to cap it off, and i really liked your quote: "...i find it is possible to minimise damage during downswings and really capitalise on upswings", i.e., its rare for me to lose more than 2-3 buyins in a session, whereas its rather common to leave up 3-4 buyins(sometimes on multiple tables), regularly. (lower limits obv, not talking 1/2 here)
