Okay, I quit playing donkaments awhile back because I hated the thought of playing good poker for three or four hours and getting nothing in return due to a bad beat, extended cold streak, cooler, or lost coinflip. So I went over to cash games and I've done pretty well and enjoyed it a lot more. I am not a hyper aggressive player, so donkaments just didn't suit me I guess. Anyhow, I feel like I was just missing a key concept from donkaments that kept me from being really good. I played a small buyin event on stars today just for the hell of it and I decided to just be balls out aggressive (it was only an $11 so what the hell right?) So what happened was I built a big stack by just shoving a lot when it folded to me and winning two flips (88 vs. AK and TT vs. AQ). My question is: is this optimal donkament poker? Is this what I was missing? Does it basically boil down to shove/stealing as much as possible and getting lucky on your flips? I only spent about six months playing donkaments before I got fed up with them, so maybe I just didn't invest enough time and generally ran bad during this time. Anyhow, the donkament in question today ended with a bad beat 99<33 and the table coach telling me "thats what you get for pushing every hand." Can I beat donkaments by just getting crunk with the shove/steals?

I was gonna make a post about this recently bc I made my first decent cash in a multi in awhile on Sunday. I have always been a consistent winning cash game player but couldnt grasp the concept of MTT play for some reason. Then I played hyper aggressive and just shoved every playable hand I had on Sunday and just consistently picked up blinds and doubled up. Unless you play a large volume of these like the top ranked MTT players do its a big donkfest with no preflop action besides all ins.

Well first off, how did you end up doing in that tourny? I actually played in a 6max tourny about a week ago and did the same thing. Its obviously easier to be aggro in a 6max, but I kinda got fed up with how my other tournys ended and I decided to play like a psycho. I ended up taking down the tourny after I built a stack playing like a nutcase. Over the summer Im going to dabble in playing like a maniac for a bit and see how it goes, but I definetly thinking taking risks and playing to win is how you're going to make $ in the long run. Once you have a stack everythings so much easier than just hoping to double up as a 70/30 fav a few times.

Okay thanks for the goodwill. I have been to Iraq myself, as well as Afghanistan. I didn't know P5s required such formal prose. Luckily I am a Masters candidate, so I can oblige in the future. However, for right now, I'd like to hear from some "tournament" experts about my post. Thanks.

That's really funny. I mean, they call them "bad beats" because you are supposed to win the hand in qustion most of the time, right? But over the course of a "tournament," you have to avoid them if you want to win, which never happens. In fact, if you want to win a large, online "tournament," you had better plan on sucking out at least once, if not more. So then, the question becomes, "are 'tournaments' nothing more than lotteries?"
