I dont post a huge amount of p5s but I do browse the forums quite often so I figured I would give some content back and do a Well like assassinato.
For those that dont know what a well is I stole the explanation assassinato used.
<blockquote>
A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Tuesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer." The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down, "Why not on Tuesday?" A voice from in the well shouts back, "Because on Tuesday, it's your day in the well."
So yeah, essentially, in this thread, I'll answer any question you have about playing professionally, the game, myself, or any random question you have that might not even to do with poker.

For those that dont know who iam I started playing poker about 5 years ago when I first went to college. I was going to college as a premed with the goal of becoming a doctor. I initially deposited 50$ twice on party poker I lost the first deposit in about 10 minutes, the 2nd deposit I lost over the course of about a month. After that I deposited 75$ on pokerstars and never had to deposit again.
I started out grinding cash games and using my profits to buy into tournaments. Then whenever I had a decent tourney score I would jump up limits. I did this until I reached 5/10 when I decided I liked mtts more and I would play them full time.
Towards the end of my sophomore year I was contemplating trying to play fulltime. So I decided that summer I would play full time and depending on how I did I would decide whether to go back to school or play poker professionally. I ran very well that summer and ended up making around 150k so after that I dropped out of school and have been playing professionally ever since.
Once I went pro I grinded online for about a year until the wsop. I had a built up a decent sized bankroll but I wasnt really comfortable potentially losing 60k+ over just a few tournaments. So I worked out a backing deal with my friends ryan daut, who had just won pca for 1.5m, and victor goossens, a dutch cashgame player. During the wsop I won the 5k nl event for 730k which I got half of. With that money I decided I had enough to go on my own. Shortly after the wsop I was lucky enough to win the 1k wcoop for 580k. With that money I decided to go into backing with daut and victor.
Since then my online volume has decreased a lot and I have spent a lot more time playing live and focusing on the backing which has grown a ton over the last year.
So anyway if people have any questions about backing/poker, etc I will try to answer. However I wont answer certain things about the players we back such as who they are, what % they have, etc. But general questions about our backing is fine. -
What are the most important things you look for when finding stakees? Do you look for them or do they find you??
-
lol sc nice delete loll but agreed
-
Is bankroll management something you used vigorously and hated sticking to, or something that just came naturally? I only play low stakes/SNGs, but I suck at not cashing out to buy something nice (TV, golf clubs, trips).
And for someone who HATES/SUCKS at bankroll management, do you have any suggestions on how to best go about it, or is it just about discipline? -
This, plus, you said that backing has become huge over the last year. I'm assuming that is because the gap between the top mtt'ers and the those rly doing well in mid to the lower end of the high stakes is narrowing. And backing these players to play at the highest levels makes sense if they haven't accumulated the proper bankroll to go it alone yet. Would you agree?
-
do you feel like people are so hush hush about horses and backing operations because they're huge tax cheats and the feds will come get them soon?
-
Mainly anymore we look for people we know very well, people that are trustworthy and mentally stable along with being skilled players. Being mentally stable and someone we can rely on not to flip out if they go on a downswing is very important.

And generally most of our guys have came to us. -
I had kind of poor br management when I first started but overtime it sort of just became 2nd nature. I dont really know any specific tips that would help with it I never really had too much trouble I would say its just mainly about self discipline.

is being a sexy red head, or "ginger kid" as your people are sometimes called, a blessing or a curse? (When answering this please seperate your professional and personal lives)

Well a big part of why we have been expanding is just as we have been making more money so we have been able to more safely add additional players without risking too much of our net worth.

I would definitely agree tho that the gap between mid level regs and the top regs has definitely decreased and I would expect it to continue decreasing. -
nah we dont really look for anything specific in terms of numbers other than high volume is important. The players we look for are mainly guys who have been around for several years. I would say 95% of the guys we back are high stakes regs that I have personally played with a ton over the years so I have a very good idea of just how good they are.

Overall what (in your opinion) defines a good stakee candidate?
I would say a good stakee candidate is someone who has already been around for a decent amount of time so they have kind of proven themselves not to be a fluke. Along with someone who is going to consistantly put in a lot of volume. Also someone who has a lot of friends in the poker community who can vouch for them as being trustworthy is always a big plus. -
Hmm no not really I know I pay all my taxes. I think the main reason its hush hush is because some guys are embarrassed to admit they are backed. A lot of guys like to portray certain images about how much money they make and such. And by admitting they are backed they feel it would lower their status amongst their peers. And along with that some guys just dont feel like its anyones business and they shouldnt have to reveal details about their personal lives.

i am looking for backers. what are the odds that you give me a chance to prove myself worthy of said backing?
-
how many sunday majors has your stable won this year?

top 5 guys you dont have but would like to? (besides me obv)
plz expose someone who fucked you over in the backing business -
How does it feel being the richest ginger for your age? Does your poker stare in live tournaments scare people?
My roomate is a ginger and is new to poker, I told him about you and now he has a gay crush on you, thoughts?
serious one now:
How did you deal with tilt and playing results oriented early on in your career when you where grinding? -
No martine isant backed its a funny story with martine. He played on his own live for almost a year grinding out satellites and such and never managing to win anything. Almost immediately after joining us he cashed for like 1m in 2 tourneys. So he ends up going on his own playing for 6 more months and winning nothing. After that he comes back to us and his very first tourney under us he wins ept london. Lucky money.

obv you went ahead with it, but what were your initial thoughts/concerns with backing sorel in the wsope and tourns you had his action in before that ?
And about sorel we were backing him before wsope and before he got into trouble on ftp and such. So we didnt really have any concerns when we first added him. -
I would say its a mixture in that anytime I step into the sun my skin catches on fire but iam warmer in the winter.

Always been a big fan, glad to see you are doing this.
What felt better, winning the WSOP bracelet while being staked or winning the WCOOP bracelet with your own money?
Whos better at poker, Mig.com or Ryan Daut?
What "live" player(s) do you consider to be the toughest to play against?
This last question might be too personal and i understand if you want to pass on it, but how much have you made from staking for the year 2008? -
I read a lot here about peeps talking about Pokertracker,Hud,etc. Are these pieces of software worth the investment? And if so what do you recommend?
-
THanks for reading this. I would like to know when does it time to do the following:
1). Moving from ringing games to table tournaments. More R.O.I.s or volume?
2). I seen the movie "All In" last night on cable television. Do you like that movie tells secrets?
3.) When is it time for bathroom in table tournament with no break soon? Gatorade bottle or cereal bowl? LOLOLz (this one is a joke, but you can tell me)
4). Is it better to smooth flat call or raise from UTG=3 with a big hands? (pairs or bigger kickers only imo)
