Hey guys. Was going to do this yesterday, but if anyone wants to ask me any questions I'll do my best not to pull any punches.
Little background on me. I was a cash game grinder for the latter end of my high school career. I switched over to low limit mtts in my early university with little success but grinded pretty hard.
About a year ago, I had a couple thousand dollars to my name. On the advice of my first poker friend/mentor, Kevin "imalucksac" MacPhee I went out to Vegas for the 08 WSOP just to get a taste of live poker and live with some other online players. Things went terribly for me but the experience of railing and discussing poker with yanniyankievich, imalucsac, imalucksac, and pikappraider opened my eyes to a lot of tournament concepts.
I was near broke but learned a ton. I went home and within month or 2 I chopped the Sunday mil for 138k. My bankroll was less than 6k at the time.
Flash forward to 1 year later. I've been on a pretty big heater. Got a substantial BR and I've played 3 10k live buy ins. I've got a triple crown and am going for my 2nd this week.
So..yeah. I don't consider myself anywhere near one of the best players or anything but if anyone wants to ask me anything I'll do my best to keep up and answer.
EDIT: PiKappRaider basically has a similar if not identical story to mine going out to Vegas and coming home and crushing. Except he won like a million dollars. Whatever... -
What advice can you give the next up and coming player from Taiwan?
-
congrats on your success. I was just curious in the late stages ofplay when everyone is getting shorter stacked when you are sitting in the 18-30 bb range and there is a raiser in front of you, should you always be looking to shove AQ+ and 1010+ over the top of them or is there any merit to just cold calling sometimes and seeing a flop?
-
How important was the summer in Vegas to your game? This seems to be a common thread with a lot of the big name pros early in their careers. I don't really have any poker playing friends and I think it's putting me at a pretty big disadvantage not having that.
-
What exactly were those concepts? What did you learn that most contributed to your success?

Thanks, and congrats on the heater, bro! -
how sick to your stomach were you about an hour after we both folded KK at PCA this year and realized that crazy euro was infact a crazy euro and not a nit like originally thought.
-
Im pretty sure you're the guy who chopped the sunday mill and your gf broke up with you :-/ Where is she now? Are your parents more understanding now too?
Also, I remember a thread you posted a long time ago about poker and "being a kid". Do you still regret not having a social life and not doing "kid" things when you were younger?
Congrats with everything and GL in the future. -
Honestly, most of the time, that's what you are looking to do. AQ+ and 1010+ is strong. It's often well ahead of any single raise.
But position is everything. I can open fold aq or 1010 to a single raise if the situation calls for it. For example, at the 163 FT yesterday a stack with 20bbs opened for 2.5 x UTG.
The stacks were incredibly shallow. I had 25 bbs and was in about 3rd place. I had 1010 in middle position and opted to throw it away. Decided that the worst hand this particular player would open here is 88+ or aq+. It also seemed that it was early at the FT and I didn't think this player would raise-fold utg.
I have no idea if this was correct. But simply putting my opponent on a a tight range i could let it go. At the same time, if I've got a maniac at my table, there are situations where I'm ready to ship in 50bbs with aq. Everything in poker tournaments is situation dependent and to be always actively making decisions based on ur opponents range is the right way to go. -
First advice: Quote the question you are answering because most people will just scroll until they see you have posted and it will be hard to scroll back up to see what question you are answering.
Second a question: do you still get anxious when you are deep in a tournament? Like when there are 3 tables left or so. does this ever affect your play if you do? Like getting too aggressive wanting to speed things up, etc. etc. -
I think the biggest struggle for any grinder is fighting the temptation to become too agg and make an unnecessary play because they are feeling too anxious and jittery. Especially deep when we feel like we can just outplay our opponents This happens to me all the time and I'm still trying to stop myself from making -ev plays because of it.

Absolutely essential. Nothing is more important in any profession than to have friends that you can discuss hands with and receive advice. People you can blow off steam too and share heartache and success. If Kevin had never invited me out, I wouldn't be where I'm at now. I can pretty much guarantee that.

I learned a shit load in Vegas. I learned was the idea of "leverage" when you have a big stack to put pressure on opponents with a big stack as well (over 30 bbs deep). Putting pressure against guys in position and force them to either over ship all in or fold there hand is very profitable deep in no limit mtts.
We never discussed concepts like concepts. I just watched everyone's hold cards I could see and tried to grab any piece of info I could find. -
I wanted to puke my guts out. But not as badly as I wanted to puke when Benham Patros shipped k9 off against my aa on the 642 board after we had hung out together all the day before and the board runs out 642-3-5. Not sure if you were at the tbale when that happened.

Then he flops top pair and busts my AA to knock me out 2 hours later. sigh..
EDIT: That euro hadn't palyed a hand all day and then proceeded to play EVERY hand after that. Ur flat was so strong I coudln't even raise. PUKE. -
What do you think of andressoprano's game?
-
My family was iffy with it for a long time, but they know better than to tell me I can't do something as they know I'm quite stubborn. They supported me.

I figured as much. If I've learned anything from P5s over the years, its just how important this is. I've joined a few groups of players with the hopes of developing some friendships, but they always seem to fizzle out. I am at a point in my game that I feel it's essential to have people to talk to about situations and hands for me to be able to progress.

Thanks for the great answer and congrats on the success. GL in the future. -
The maven's training scenario is quite a joke. People shelling out 5k for information they could get from just hanging out and asking advice from much better online players. I got this for free and a lot more just coming out to Vegas.

Be friendly and talk to people. I dont think I've met a tournament player who wasn't willing to discuss strategy with me away from the table. THIS = way more valuable then watching pre-recorded video of Maven winning tournies IMO. -
Yep. that was me. We are still good friends. She's actually one of biggest supporters back home now. My parents are more than understanding, they support me now 200%. My success has allowed me to help out my family financially.

I was kind of a loner kid for the first 20 years of my life. People liked me but I mostly kept to myself. I had a lot of issues with depression and what not. I feel like I've gotten over most of it, but I still struggle with it every now and then. I missed out on a lot of standard growing up experiences because of it and it still hurts to think about. But can't change the past, can only look to the future. I do regret it, but I do my best to sustain a positive attitude.
Money is great, but it is what it is. In the last few months I've drastically changed my lifestyle to accompany a very active social life. My life has improved and my game has improved as a result.
I highly recommend anyone who feels too degen to go out most of the time to force yourself to the bar. Even if you don't enjoy it, you'll enjoy your time in front of the computer more when they return. -
What adjustments have you made in your tournament game that has given you consistent success in the biggest rebuy turneys, what things are you doing differently then other people? Obviously you have to play these tournaments differently then any of the other ones, What things do you notice that you adjust specifically for the big rebuys where your very deep the whole time with good players. I kinda thought recently that you had slowed downnn a whollle lot and seemed to be flying under the radar and picking sick spots? Is this true or am i just oblivious?
Any thoughts on my game would be appreciated: TOUGH CRITICISM PLEASE!
gl man. -
No need to bump the thread Kev. The low limit guys are the ones the thread is for anyway.

ADZ has a tv show in the works? Please do tell me about in private. I'm starting on my own pilot script at the moment and I might have a TO connect to some producers. I'm very interested. I won't be playing a live tournament until at least November when the BC poker championship comes around. Dylan says he's probably going? u in?
Just for people reading. Kevin isn't exactly gay as much as he just comes on to me all the time. The vegas trip was awesome..but my a-hole sure did hurt when I woke up every morning for some reason..
