  1. So, I started playing online a little less than a year ago... I've got a decent job and make good money and it was kind of a way to kill free time. After burning through a few grand I decided to pull my head out of my ass a few months ago and start taking the game seriously. I bought all the books, and have read and studied them thoroughly. I signed up for a mttacademy and deuces cracked and watch video's daily and try to pick up everything i can... i spend all my time on here and dc and try and learn everything i can. those who have been successful, what's helped the most? I've gotten a lot better at sng's after studying icm extensively, and i'm trying to get to a point where i can show a positive roi in tournys... What should I be doing?
  2. reading and watching videos will help a bit im sure, but i never watched one or opened a book. U just have to play a lot of poker.

This. I don't believe anyone who says (as everyone does) that they are good at poker unless they've played hundreds of thousands of hands. There are very limited exceptions, but for the most part the only way to get good is to play a shit ton, then play some more.
  4. Theory is a great background, but you have to play the game a lot in order to understand the concepts they are teaching and learn how to execute them. You can read all the flight manuals you want, but that doesn't mean you can fly a plane. I think if you start putting in volume and try to incorporate and consciously think about the things you have learned as you play then you should be successful

  5. I never really knew what poker was until four years ago, was at a friends, saw her hubby playing. Ran home downloaded a site and never looked back!! I've learnt from playing endless hours and talking/discussing things with poker buddies online....Never read a book or watched a vid although i plan to now a certain Mement_Mori is making them :-)) I think everyone has to find their own game they are comfortable with...that means playing ALOT of poker!
  6. Quitting early really helped my game A LOT!!!! Saved me thousands.
  7. i got alot of my experience from living with my friend who is a high stakes reg...also have some other friends who are backed and such. it really helps to have friends that play and enjoy helping you out.

do you mean quitting early, before tilting?

also, from appleton!?! dude i grew up there, 2007 from fvl
  9. I played every day for 3 months straight. This was when I was going to play poker professionally. Live the life of luxury slap bitches, smack hoes, ect...

At the end of the 3 months I played I felt like I was starting to get a grip on the game. The reason is becasue of the sheer amount of hands and situations I saw and was put in. The best way to get great is to simply put the time and effort in. That is why these guys are so good becasue there whole life is poker. They spend many hours a day playing, reviewing hands, studying...

rRad the books, put the volume in, when you make your first mill give some money to charity... ez game
  10. Nothing beats playing. After that, posting hands here, and commenting on every hand posted that I could helped a lot (especially the ones I was wrong on, and debated to find out why).

Also helps to start at low stakes. Beat $5 games before trying to beat $20 games

  12. pokerstove sticky spots, just check/understand the odds in many situations helps you make better decisions, also lets you know who the spew's are/aren't and adjust your situation to them.
  13. read some books watched some vids played constantly and that all help get a grasp of what to do. but the biggest thing was just constantly reading HHs online wheather they were mine or others, reading the comments, posting mine, underwstanding how a hand develops, considering all factors, and doing a lot of poker stove and sgwiz to understand late game situations better when theres more short stack play. ive played for about 7 years and really it wasnt until about a year ago when things just started to click. sure i won before that but looking back now on my past successes i would call myself a donk compared to now.
  14. talking to my friend who was better than me

  15. I'm thoroughly convinced that unless you put in proper volume or run well above expectation you might as well not even play....
  16. few free vids on pxf, rizen, apestyles, jon turner's book, and some hand histories from different pros
  17. people that told me that I wasn't the unluckiest player alive and told me stfu and stop whining.
still have a problem with taht one...

  22. It's been said before but yea I'd like to add a few more things.

    1) Folding pre. When I first joined I posted hands and people were ripping me for playing so and so hand and constantly tell me to fold pre. They tell me the numerous reasons, ie. bad reverse implied odds, out of position ie. calling from the blinds, raising a marginal hand from UTG and UTG+1. Stuff like that.

    2) Playing with a plan. A lot of losing players when they play a hand, have no idea what they are doing. When I play a hand, I usually have a plan on how to play it. Most of my plans are simple ie. set mining. In lower stakes you can get away with having simple plans and being a winning player.

    3) Playing lots. You'll start to notice types of players and learn how to exploit them by playing a lot of hands.
  23. Appreciate all the input guys... i'm gonna buy better weed and play more:)

  24. when i started book were a great help AND being around some sick players 24/7. Once you play live enough you can basically tell what the weak/mediocre players are doing and stay away from the tougher players.
  25. volume, Volume, VOLUME!!!!!!
