  1. Ok Im new to these forums, so hi guys, and Im hoping Ill get better at poker reading the discussion forums here, but this is a serious question. Ive played online poker for about a year now, (seriously for 8 months), and Ive made a little bit playin on PokerRoom, but sometimes I have major doubts about my game. I have bulit my bankroll up in that time, but it seems almost like the fluctuations in my winnings are more significant than overall trend. Im playin 1/2 NL there, with occasional tournies thrown in the mix, but the scary part is I have weeks where I lose or win as much as 15% of my bankroll, and Im wondering if that is extraordinarily high fluctuation...I think Im a poor money manager, perhaps playing poorly when I get a good hand cracked, but was curious how much swing other people experience Also, when I took a trip to Full Tilt, the 1/2 tables are alot harder there, any advice from someone who has made the transition before?
  2. I really used to grind it out alot. Getting a $50 transfer on PS's from a friend and playing $1/2 limit on there and building it up to $7,500 moving up in limits. I would recommend trying some other sites or trying sit n go's etc. Ive been playing for about 2 years and just recently realized I was winning more playing strictly tourneys than cash games. You really just gotta experiment with both the limits and the games. I would strongly suggest PS's if you wanna play cash games. The site is huge and filled with many donks who really are just playing for entertainment. You will also want to adjust your game depending on the time of the day. You will notice at different times tables have different flows to em. If you ever find yourself unable to sleep. Try logging onto a site highly populated with US players and you will find many trying to make up their loses for the day and really play a LAG style or just are scared money in games out of their bank roll.
  3. Yes 15% sounds pretty high to me. I'd suggest reading Fox's bankroll management article in the Strategy Archives and see if the levels you are playing at (1/2 NL and whatever MTT buy-ins you are playing) fit within the appropriate guidelines for your goals.
  4. 15% would be high if you had a sufficient br, but you didnt mention a specific #.....

  5. My BR is around 7500, and the worst losing swing Ive ever taken is about 1000 (playing 1/2 NL 200 buy in) almost 15% ... I can feel it happening too, I just need to excercise control...I get stuck like 100-200 on a bad beat and all of a sudden Im Loose like a Tara Reid and Agressive like Mike Tyson. Anyway, I cant play solid poker for the next few days and I lose until I take a day off, acknowledge that the money is no longer mine, and grind it out again. Thanks guys for referring me to the article, Ill check it out. Also good point about tourneys vs. cash games, I know my decisions in tournies are way better than cash games, and have won 5 of 9 times Ive FT'ed a tourney, but getting there is SO frustratingly hard and slow

  6. I have played a decent amount with you Syntec, although under different SN's.

From what I remember you were a decent player, but a little too loose(not against me though, you knew my style). My old SN was Charity-Case, but I now play 2/4-5/10 as GutshotsPWN.

I played down in limits experimenting with playing more tables last week and I was playing 1/2 on PR and I was killing it. Why? Because whether donks or tight players EVERYONE there is passive. DONT BE LIKE THEM!!!!

Raise for value pairs and other good hands pre flop and you will be surprised how often those 3 limpers will fold for $10 more. And if you gte un a big pot make sure you have a big hand, otherwise wait for a better spot. If people start noticing you raising a bit too much(to them) they will start to never give you credit for anything

    -Get PokerTracker, and Gametime +

    - I signed up for Cardrunners and I think applying what they teach to a TAG style for full ring works awesome vs. passive players.

    - I have a very good solution to stop tilting. When I feel like I am getting pissed I hit the power button on my computer and take an hr break. I don't wait for the next hand, whatever. I just turn my computer right off so I stop playing. Then I don't come back till my head is clear.
  7. Hey Charity/Gutshots, why the acct change I remember playin with you alot. And what you said sounds reminiscent of my own feelings on the subject, now I just have to do it. When I get board, with little aggressive play there Ill raise XXo lol, but if I tighten up and value bet more hopefully Ill do better, and even get more respect on my continuation bets. So here's another question...how do you make big money playing TAG, cause one reason I play a LAG (too loose, granted) style is so that I will get action on my real hands, and I do. Also, you make a good point, play a big pot with a big hand...I sometimes find that when I catch up part way from a bluff I go with it, and compound the mistake. Cant use pokertracker Im on a mac ...and what is gametime? What results should I track carefully on my own... I think Ill try your advice for tilting, b/c usually I play out a full round, till BB, and lose a bunch of money those next few hands. Another question: do you play higher levels than 1/2 ever? How hard are those transitions and do you have any tips there (not that Im thinkging of moving up till I can crush the 1/2)....and also...do you play on other sites, if so, which ones and which games? I started on PR and am trying FT now but PR is like the weakest site from what I can tell, thoughts on transitioning / what works against better players? Thanks a ton

  8. PM me your email and I will send you some info on PT and some advice.
  9. that kind of downswing is very much normal for an average player, and not unheard of for a very good player. It tends to depend on your playing style, but the variance for 1/2 NL can be a real bitch. that's not a bad point to be at after 8 months though, and it's certainly better than I was doing at that point.
  10. Ok, glad to hear its not out of this world, cause sometimes if I take a few decent beats I start to complain alot and I feel like maybe Im not being objective in my evaluations. That said, I do have to work on not tilting, since my A-game really is good I think, but I give it back too easily when Im on my ... well they dont have a letter bad enough for my worst game..hehe

  11. I get tilted pretty easily after a few beats too, and it's not always easy to step away from the computer when you should.

as far as other sites to try, I've had a ton of good Fortune so far moving up limits over at party. There aren't as many passive players there so much as there are calling stations who will pay off your big hands.
