  1. I have read on some of the post of the Pro's raises that look some thing like this:
    Player x55x raises 581 to 731
I just do not see the value in it. If it is just a personal prefrance or is there a reason to the madness?

  2. Why not do it?
  3. some think it puts people on tilt
  4. it's more about pot control and image than anything else... my open raise is 2.5-2.75X, and I often bet weird numbers

  5. doesnt put ppl on tilt but i think it makes ppl more uneasy, harder to calculate ur stack vs how much u are putting into the pot and harder to deal with it. i think it also adds a bit of unpredictability to ur game if u bet a different ammount each time which is something you would like as a poker player. overall im not sure if its that much +ev but it hink it can only possibly have more value than not compared to std raises and its a bit more fun, so why not do it.

sometimes i do bet normal ammounts tho, its all kinda random.

  7. A combo of the above three posts.
  8. It puts me on stone cold phil helmuth tilt
  9. because it looks cooler if the chips are stacked higher.

  10. The best reason I've heard for doing this is that, if your opponent is playing multiple tables, odd bets can look like all-ins, so you might get a call that you normally wouldn't get, since who raises 776 unless they are all-in?

Plus, the fact that it seems to bug people so much seems like a good enough reason to do it. Whenever you can make your opponents uncomfortable while playing, you are doing something right.
  11. I believe I read that Richard Brodie said he tends to get called more on line if his bets end in "99". Maybe people don't take odd bets as seriously.
  12. what lordxixor101 said ive been fucked by this quite a few times when i thought i was getting 2 draws at my flush for the price of one lol
  13. Say blinds are 500/1000, betting 2752 is essentially doing the same as in betting 3000. It's also saving u money in the long run ;P
  14. what waco said...

i typically raise between 2.4x and 3x the bb (usually at random) so sometimes that just works out to be a funny number... i dont sit there like "well i think im gonna raise it to 2.68794984x the BB this time, give me a sec to crunch the numbers.... ok raise!" i just type in some random number that is around the raise i wanna make... this also lets u raise to literally whatever u want in the vv late levels without arousing any kind of suspicion as to ur motives...

  15. Waco pretty much hit it on the head. I also heard a theory that the stack looks bigger and it will simply look like a larger bet to weaker/lazy players. A person with a third grade education could boil it down to 2/2.5/3 BB intervals, but we all know that the majority of players on these sites play like they don't have even that level of education.
  16. I like to make my stack end in ,000 and I will raise what it takes to get there. 2 biggest factor are I'd rather raise <3x to outplay people postflop, and sheer boredom.

  17. Asymmetrical stacks make ppl nervous/adds some productive value to my MTT finger-drumming (applicable starting at the 200/400 level).
  18. It makes me much more likely to play back at them, that's for sure.
  19. SDOUBLE started this and everyone followed along - this has been happening for a long time - it's mainly to throw off meager opponents.

  20. People subsconciously see a higher stack and do not want to call as much. My general raise is 2.3x to 2.5x the big blind and when I bet the weird numbers I don't get called nearly as much as I do when I just make it 3x.

Pot control is also huge. There is a big difference between me raising 3x, then making a 4x c-bet that fails, then making a 2.5x raise, and then a 3x c-bet. It doesn't look like a big difference
but over a large tournament those add up.

A lot of very tight players will call a 2.4x raise too and if they don't hit absolute gin on the flop they will fold.

  23. I think assassinato hit this one dead on.......like how he said that raising 2.5x then 3x is way better than 3x then 4x.....if the blinds are 300-600 and you do 3x PR and c-bet 4x your risking 4200 for information that could be gotten for about 1000 chips less....IMO 1000 chips matters in a lot of MTT's and thats just on one hand
  24. ^^ LOL Not only do I understand it but I just told you where it originated from.

  25. i like to put some spit on my raises before i put them in the middle in live games...
  26. I like to put players allin -1 chip. So if they have 3400 left bet 3399 so that this way they are more comfortable calling me b/c it wont be for their tournament life.

    Chip and a chair right?
  27. But what if he stop n gos u?

  28. ^^^^^^^What they said....AND you can't do this sort of cool stuff in live tourneys. Well, at least not with as much style ;)

  29. I should give you a stunner for saying stone cold and phil hellmuth in the same sentence.

    WHAT?

  30. A while ago this actually used to be a viable strategy, as opponents would simply look at the chip stack bet and not realize what the actual amount was. I stopped doing it as now everybody does it and there is no advantage to raising 721 rather than 800. for those who say pot control it has a miniscule effect. but when only a handful of players were doing it, it was very effective. just one of the many little advantages that have disapeared in the last year.
