When do you decide to give up online poker and focus on live play?
Is it when your $100 down? $500 down? $1k down? $5k? $10k? Or somewhere in between?
I have had limited success over the last few years {about 3 yrs} over a few sites, playing cash games and SNGs. I cant win @ the lower limits $1/$2NL and under, but have had some good results in the $2/$4 and $3/$6 NL tables, but i dont have the bankroll to constantly play at these stakes.
I am probably down $3k overall, after cashing out close to $8k over the last 3 years to pay some bill in between work, buy kids Birthday gifts and so on. Basically i am not in debt and cant survive but i figure why play only to loose?
The big clincher is that its over 1hrs drive to the casino and with my current work and family life its hard to fit in the amount of poker i crave without playing online.
Has anyone here had the same issues? Have the sucessfully stopped playing online completely and survived off fortnightly/monthly casino trips? And is it time for me to stop playing online? I would love to hear what people think.
Cheers -
got the same problem basically I used to have pretty good success in live poker at the casino here. I needed a new job so I got a job at said casino therefore forcing me to go at least 2 hours to play poker. I like my job dealing poker at the same place where i used to play but online frankly is boring and harder to grind out online then live.
my online losses this month are ok since i made 1k each on both trips i took to the nearest casino this month. -
so u feel my pain? Its hard to find the strength to drive ur ass up to the casino after a days work and how easy is it to click ur FTP icon and away you go. Do you belive that if you played soley online, although it would be less hours invested, your results would make up for the lack of play?

the game i play at the casino 2 hours away is by far the juiciest game I have ever played in online/live. I usually play limit cash or no-limit tournament since I am the most comfortable with those two games. It just seems that the play of online players is so much better then live play. Even by dealing games I notice this.
I play 10/20 live it feels like 3/6 online plus the one thing that I always hated was building up your roll to over 1k then losing it in a day. Has happened to me many times. I have never lost huge like that live because I would have got up and left the table. I can't seem to do that online because the money doesn't seem real to me.
I'm done for online though unless I wanna play majors some night. -
Basically man it depends on how good of a job you have. You said you can survive but how much is that exactly. If you're living comfortably then losing 3k over 3 years on poker is no thing I wouldn't think. If you truly love playing poker then losing 1k/1yr has got to be worth it. But if you're not doing that well then why not trying to set a loss-limit for the week such as 100,200 bucks, switching to tourneys, and only playing them in moderate amounts. That way on any given night you can get your poker fix in for maybe only 10,20 bucks and still have a chance to win some decent money. You said you can beat 2/4 and 3/6 games from time to time but not 1/2 which doesn't really make sense, but from that I take it you like to play a tighter style of poker and don't like how wild 1/2 games can get. Playing tight in low-limit tourneys has and always will work.

It sounds to me like you have a problem with bankroll management. I have decent success online after about a year of constant studying and playing, and am just now thinking about switching to cash games. I will be playing 1-2 (though I have the bankroll to play more), just because I think bankroll management is very important in cash games.
The point of my story is that I can't imagine anyone even thinking about sitting at 2/4 and especially 3/6 if they are not crushing the lower buy ins already. Stick to beating smaller stakes cash, and then move up when you have a large bankroll. Bottom line is to be a consistent winner at 2/4 and 3/6 you have to be very good at poker. I have not tried it, nor will I try it probably for a decent amount of time. -
lol, if you beat live poker but not online poker, thats when you know you should give up on online poker.

I think its hard for everyone to just plan quit online poker i cant seem to although id say im ahead but it is hard to not quit after going from 1500 to 100K then losing it all seeing that your only down 3k and you play 3/6NL i dont think you should quit because you can win 3k in one day playing 3/6NL.
