How long have you been playing and how long was it before you final tabled or shipped a MTT? I started playing online early April and I am getting discouraged. I play once or twice a week and my best finish is 20th. I have ran pretty well in some tourneys, but fizzled out in the last 100 remaining.

You've only been playing online 2 months. No offense but if you're already getting discouraged then maybe MTTs aren't for you. I've been playing online for about 5 years and I have gone 6-8 months with no significant cashes and I play prob 10-12 hours a day usually. You can't expect results with so little volume. You have to have realistic goals and understand that you're not going to FT something every week. As long as you have proper BR management and enjoy playing just keep at it. Continue learning and improving and it'll come. Gl sir.

As others have said, you probably need to learn some patience. I started playing in March 2003, and probably won my first tournament in about May. With that said, field sizes were much smaller back then, most $5-$10 tournaments had like 150-250 people in it. You are talking about a time where regular tournaments were capped at 400 players and almost never reached the cap, so it was much easier to win a tournament as the players numbers were much lower.
On average, I play about 4-5 days a week, usually 4-7 hour sessions, and with that I am winning a MTT about every 4 weeks ON AVERAGE. It is not rare to go 3-4 months without winning a tournament. So, it could take you quite long to win a tournament.
Of course, you also may not be that good, that could be a whole nother problem. Semi joking with this last line, as I don't want to be a dick, but at the same time this could explain your lack of winning. -
I started playing regularly in October last year (before, i sometimes won some cents in a freeroll, and loose them almost within the hour), and won my first tourny like a month after... i didnt had much experience, however i was good in the math and theory... (i've never won another tourny again, but i finished 2° like 3 months ago)...

Haven't you heard the saying about Holdem, "It is easy to learn, but it takes a lifetime to master." Think about that for a short while. Unless you will die soon, don't put that much pressure on yourself. Maybe you have started playing at a level above your skill set. You might know the mechanics of the game but not the skills of when to play and what hands are profitable.

Study and read about poker. Maybe, if you have an account with Full Tilt, go to Full Tilt Academy and read and study some of their material and watch some videos (it's free training if you have FTP account). Take some of their test and take some of the challenges. Take them seriously and you will be surprised how much you can learn.
Start small and build a bank roll and gain some experience. If you get discouraged and you've only been playing a couple months; you are not thinking about the game correctly. -
I started playing poker a year ago, when i read up a news about Phil Ivey's wins in some poker tourneys, i got interested to it, I try to play for free at Bodog then started to play a freeroll poker tournament then while earning some winning to freerolls i started playing live at FPT and at FT online. I read ebooks, strategies and Super System 1 and 2 to hone some poker skills.

5 Years ago...and I've never shipped a big MTT, just small ones occationally and a couple FT's

Volume is key my friend, if you are gonna be in town this weekend, hit me up
-
thanks for the advice, I will start working on volume and patience.

Been playing online since 06 roughly, took me about 1 1/2 to 2 years to ship an MTT

I've been playing on and off for about 6 years now, would quit for extended periods of time. Always played stupid as a beginner, higher stakes, didn't care about a bankroll, etc. Now I've began playing a little better, reading a lot more and more focused on my bankroll. I haven't shipped any MTT, took 5th in an 18k GTD, that's my biggest win. I'm down to low stakes 45 man SnG right now, looking to push forward to some 180man. I currently work full-time and have a part-time job as well, so I don't spend as much time as I'd like playing. To me now, it makes sense to start out in micro and build your bankroll, see more hands.

VOLUME ... and seriously reduce your expectations to reduce your dissapointment. Work on getting better not just money or 1st place finishes.
-
play 4/180's, build a roll and some confidence in your game. Put in more volume
-
I won my 24th tournament.
-
been playing for about 4/5 years, I have won a few 180's but my best finish in a big MTT is 149th from a 6000 field. One day I hope to take down one of them:)
-
playing about 3 years I think..... couple of micro final tables but never shipped anything with more than 400 players. The 180s are about the only thing i can beat :(
-
shipped an 11r 2 months into playing tournaments for the first time and led to some costly lessons
