Hello,
Edited By: ReaM Feb 8th, 2012 at 11:48 PM
my first Post.
I've played poker for almost 4 weeks now. It means, four weeks ago I did not know what blinds were and I did not know anything about poker, not even how many cards one gets in the beginning. Long story short, I need a little help, where to start.
I seem to be profitable (there is not enough data to confirm this though) in cash games and in tournaments (mostly freeroll at pokerstars) I often finish in top 1000 (out of 25000 players).
I read Poker For Dummies at first, then Winning Low Limit poker (Krieger), now reading Every Hand Revealed and Harrington. I am more interested in MT tournamets. I actually did not like starting hands in neither Harrington nor Krieger, seemed too loose to me. I chose my own 40 hands that I allow myself to play (exceptions are made where stealing blinds), and seems to work well.
My stats for the last tournament:
You finished in 307th place (eliminated at hand #75267426125).
189 hands played and saw flop:
- 6 times out of 20 while in small blind (30%)
- 7 times out of 20 while in big blind (35%)
- 23 times out of 149 in other positions (15%)
- a total of 36 times out of 189 (19%)
Pots won at showdown - 15 out of 22 (68%)
Pots won without showdown - 10
Unfortunately, I don't have much time to play, so any book recommendation etc would be nice. It is horrible to waste time on a book which is not good.
I would love to hear some recommendations (books, videos?).
I know, freeroll has the loosest opponents, so I know, my stats mean not much. I don't want to play buy-ins yet, because I am afraid I am going to loose money^^
My goal in poker is to earn in average more than the buy-in costs. I would appreaciate any help.
Thank you in advance! -
Yeah I'd just ignore Harrington. Welcome though.

Thanks,
I also have troubles reading the forum, there are many many abbreviations and I don't understand them at all. Is there a list? I don't even know what "shove" means. -
I have always thought the Phil Gordon books were a good start for beginners. That vein said the best thing to do is play. Books will help with general concepts and thy definitely helps but nothing substitutes playin hands and learning through your own trials.

Sorry for the typos. On my phone. Hope that's legible at least. -
I understand everything from the beginner books like pot odds etc.
So I guess, I'll just have to play and see how far I go each time. -
Your stats, 88XIN88, seem perfect, the prize won is always bigger than buy-in.
Congratulations on TCOOP win. -
Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time is a sick read

Start with reading "kill Phil" great start for tourney play. then"kill everyone" then move to the "winning poker tournaments one hand at a time"

I agree with sirjwab above but first two I mentioned will give you the basics of tourney play so best to read first . -
+1 on Phil Gordon's books, when I was starting I went with them and they helped me a lot. I think that's a great place to start, and then go work on your game from that information. I found when I was starting that I felt like I had read too many books, and I was constantly changing my styles rather than fine-tuning a style, and I was over-thinking. Maybe I'm way off, has anyone else experienced that?
I quit playing pretty much for quite awhile and am trying to get back into it, and focusing on going back to the basics... playing tight and playing position. My opinion is that it's ok to make this your main focus at this point, and throw in some learning on shove/fold scenarios because if you're like me you're going to find some issues at the mid-stages and bubble play. I need to work on my mid-game badly to stop going into the lower stages of when the bubble bursts with 15 BBs or less. -
