By sunk cost, I think he was more trying to say that if you did not buyin again, your investment would be completely lost with no chance to recoup what you were in for.
If your threshold is say $1200 where it becomes no longer profitable, quiting at $1200 would definately give you a loss of $1200 for the tourney, however bumping it to $1500 may give you enough equity in the prize pool to cut your average loss on the $1500 to say $900.
So instead of losing $1200 you only lose $900 buy adding another buyin. The higher the number goes them more likely it is that you will have a high enough ROI to cover the next rebuy, and you should always continue to rebuy. If your ROI is not high enough to do this then you shouldn't be playing $109 Rebuys. -
Thank you very much for the helpful insight all. I think in general I will keep the same crazy style first hour in order to accumulate chips, but perhaps lower my range of calling all ins while at 3k stack, by just a bit, lowering avg cost just a bit. Thanks for the advice to email stars requesting tourney data in excel format!!!! Never knew you could do that...consider it done. Thanks phat cat, and all the others...
Also, I am going to keep detailed stats on these recording as many variables as i can, including 2nd hour starting stack....and then re'look the situation later, because the answer to this question will be different for each player, and I want to know my optimal point, and not guess where my optimal point is. The idea of sunk costs is so true, i always yell at friends if they don´t rebuy the last one right before break...like burning $.
Gl everyone,

DRY WINS FOR THREAD OF THE WEEK... always a pleasure to hear from a world class player such as yourself, as well as the many great players who responded to your thread... all the information discussed is very helpful and intuitive.

personally i like the idea of spending 5k in the $200R
its so awesome because you're viewed as a maniac even after the break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats the real beauty of it -
I am not a 100R player, but I do play the 3-5-10 R tournys, I sweat the 100R's often, there are a couple of things that I really dont understand why the top internet players do what they do, first one being the 100 add on if your top 5 in chips, why spend another $100.00 if you already have 25k+ chips? almost everyone does this, and I dont see the point of this, 2nd being if you got 17k+ chips in the first 30 minutes why not tighten play up? I see alot of good internet players playing loose as a goose with a bigstack in the first 30 minutes, I have watched alot go busto by 45 minutes into it and get stuck another 1500.00 trying to build back up, but the addon with 25k+ in chips confuses me the most, I dont see how 3k chips is worth a 100.00, but maybe I look at a 100.00 bill a little different than the top online players, but I know in the 3R I am not going to add on 3 bucks for 3k chips if I have over 20k in chips, the way I look at it if I lose a all in hand and go busted I probably would of lost with 20k or 23k in chips but just lost 3 more dollars than what I would of. could a top online players please explain to me why they add on with a exceptionally big stack at break? thanks in advance..

Probably BeLOWaBOVe is giving some good insight...everyone is giving you the math which is of huge importance, but there's still the table dynamics to consider....There could be variation on the number of rebuys due to the tight/loooseness of the table....or the way individual players are playing??? Very interesting to think how the dynamics factor in...
