I have played a small tournament at the casino where the LAPT is held and the best part was that they allowed people to play the live tournament while also having a laptop on the chair next to them playing online tournaments at the same time. This was 2 years ago but doubt they changed that much.

Pretty much all of the fun touristy stuff (mostly outdoors type stuff) is a bit outside of San Jose. If you bust out the first day, I'd recommend having the hotel arrange transportation to either the rainforest or one of the many beaches in this country to spend a day or two in one of those places. There's a lot of cool stuff to do--see an active (or inactive) volcano, take canopy tours, hanging bridges, rapelling, bungie jumping, horseback riding, a lot of great hikes, hot springs, exotic wildlife, scuba diving, jet skiing, etc.... You just can't really do any of it without travelling at least a couple hours outside of San Jose...
The city itself doesn't have a ton to do, and downtown is generally regarded as pretty dangerous for tourists (the tournament is in Cariari--about 10 km outside downtown San Jose). It's going to be pretty much poker and nothng else if you hang around the SJ area. That said, the poker should be fun too :)
