poker is my only form of entertainment when im home ... and i been on a bad loosing streek lost over 20 bucks in 2 days how do u just get up and walk away i feel when i loose i keep going but become to frustraited to make good decisions how do u just walk away !?!?!
-
If it makes you feel better I had a $600 downswing the past few days. Phil Galfond posted a graph of a one million dollar downswing in only 4k hands. $20 isn't something to lose sleep over, and in poker, losing streaks are inevitable.
I find it really easy to walk away. I'm probably happier playing Call of Duty or watching Lost than I am playing poker. If it makes it easier utilize the self-ban feature. -
20 bucks in two days???? Thats a win!!!! celebrate stop crying.
-
well 20 bucks is alot of money to me being as that im low on cash about every day of my life i play $1 sngs and i feel i get beat on dumb hands i know people play bigger then i do but when all u have extra from ur pay check every week is about 40 bucks 20 bucks is alot of money that i could use to keep my self busy i need to find ways to back away when i start to get frustrated
-
Try the freeroll tourneys on stars. When you accumulate a bankroll, try the 1.00 SNGs. You need 100 buy ins to play these. GL.
-
You really have to disassociate yourself from the money. It's easier said than done but if you're tilting over money in poker, you have a problem that you have to fix.
I always quote this line: "Eventually, in poker, you're going to run worse than you ever thought was possible." Just accept that crazy awful runs happen in poker, and once you start losing money you'll be more cool with that. -
ummm, if that's true, self-ban yourself. Not saying your a gambling addict but your losing an amount you said you can't afford and you're asking for help on how to stop...easy answer seems to be the only one imo

100 buyins at these stakes seems a little overly cautious.

To all you people making it seem like $20 isn't a big deal, congrats for living such a good life. Sometimes $20 is a big deal to people.
As you are already playing low stakes like this, you are well aware you aren't going to make a ton of money even if you go on a heater. So either you are playing on a dream of making big bucks with low stakes or you are playing to make a little bit of money to move up later down the road and have fun now.
If $1 sngs are giving you trouble with a downswing, change to a lesser variance or cheaper game. Try the $1 DONs or the .10 360 person sngs. First place is $8 in the .10s. Even the .25 90 man non turbos are a good game to try.
As far as when to walk away, you answered your own question. As soon as you feel frustrated. If you are playing 1 table at a time, even if you are still in the game, its easy to sit out for a few hands and step away from the computer and take a couple deep breaths and try to relax. If you are multitabling that would be a little more difficult but try it anyway. Just a hand or 2. Then take a break before you start up again. If you are talking about walking away for good, self exclusion would be best.
People need to stop judging others by the stakes they play and try helping when genuine questions are asked. -

I feel sorry for the op

Playing those stakes are a waste of time. If you have time to waste then go for it. If you want to call it entertainment then so be it. If the 20 means a lot to you then leave it off of the site. Try to build something from freerolls if you have all that time to waste and don't want to lose 20.

I play lowstakes as well but I have pretty much come to the conclusion that if I can't get at least 50 or 100 bux online and play minimum 5 dollar tournies(which I still hate) then my personal belief is don't even bother. That is just me though.
It's so funny to me how people think that because they think they know how to play poker everything should just click and they should start printing money.
My favorite posts that make me lol is the ones that say, "I have 400 dollars in XYZ poker account. What should I play." WTF dude. What are you good at? What do you like to play? Come to my 1/2 PLO table so you can be the biggest fish there with no bankroll management instead of me....
But for real the OP sounded like a level at first but if it is serious then consider the 20 bux entertainment like you said. If you are just looking to play some cards to pass the time there always freerolls to practice with and maybe turn nothing into something.
Just my two cents. But honestly if the 20 dollars means a lot to you then you could be using your time in a much more productive manner IMO.

well thanks to all the people with the real advice im greatfull and i m not asking to win a ton of money ..but i feel if i could win and build a decent bank roll i would start with the higher games and i like to do the cheap multi table tourneys cause there fun and alot of excitment to me i dont make alot money but i dont mind putting money on here to keep me busy its better then when i was droping money on world of warcraft for no reason what so ever this is my hobbie and im just tring to fidn out how do u over come the frustration and stay focused i want to be a better poker player just like alot people

Hey man you really sound sincere so don't listen to all these fags on here that got nothing better to do than talk shit. People are looking at it the wrong way, even though 20 dollars may not be a lot to some, it was a good portion of if not all of your online bankroll. I was broke more times than I can count my first couple of years and I remember when loosing 40-80bucks was tradgic. So I feel you when you talk about feeling frustrated and loosing more than you prob should have.
My estimation of poker skill level/experience is something along the lines of, "I've played a lot of home games or at my casino and read some books and fourms, I know I can beat online I just get really unlucky and all my big hands get cracked by garbage." This is not meant to degrade you at all but the fact of the matter is if you are not beating 1 dollars sngs you just need more experience and lack sound fundemental strategy. That being said if you have the willingness, drive and desire you could learn to be profitable is low stakes sngs in a very short amount of time.
So my best advice is you have two routes in which you decided to approach poker, you can either:
1.Play rereationalaly for small stakes, once in a while make a little bit of money but overall don't have what it takes to be a long term winner.
2.Take is serious and become profitable at it. Even if you are not a poker pro and have a full time job you can still be a big winner. In order to do this though you have to be willing to read the fourms, watch videos, discuss hand and strategy with other players, and really strive to improve.
Either route you decided to take GL -
Well the 1st thing I thought was that if your low on cash, you are probably playing incredibly tight, and dont get action on your good hands, but then when you take a beat, then you start playing faster/dumber and lose more....its VERY easy to walk away
It was hard at first but now if I'm like IMMEDIATELY knocked out of the first 3-4 tourneys I'm playing because of bad beats, not sure what other sign I'd be looking for, its not my day, unregister from everything else and walk away...
You KNOW when your pissed off- the SECOND you feel that, click the sit out next hand on all of your tables, no exceptions, and walk away...if you HONESTLY feel like you could play some solid good poker 2 hours or so later, then sure, you've got your cool back and hit it up online again...just some advice... -
yeah i mean i dont make alot of money right now i was layed off from a job and now work a job i used to work 2 years ago so money is coming in as much but its enough to do what i enjoy i like to play poker but i just get angry when i go all in pocket queens and somebody calls me 5 3 suited and wins with the flush i would never call an all in hand with that in my hand i just dont understand it lol

WoW, Civ4, something like that
quakelive.com you'll be on that all the time too -
OP, I feel for ya. I don't say this to be a jerk, but based on the quoted statement above and the general feel of your comments, I'm guessing you lack a fundamental understanding of how to play SnGs optimally (there are plenty of times when 53s would be a good call there, depending on a whole host of factors).

I suggest you get ahold of one of these two books: 'Sit 'n Go Strategy' by Collin Moshman or 'Secrets of Sit'n'gos' by Phil Shaw. You may even be able to get ahold of them without spending any money (library? my first poker books were library checkouts).
When you read one of those and learn how to play SnGs optimally, you'll not only start beating the games you're playing, you will also find it much easier to handle bad beats. Once you understand the math and the variance, it's so much easier to not worry about each individual hand, or even each individual tournament.
You seem like a very genuine poster - I wish you best of luck at the tables! -
I think the problem is in your mind state. #1 is your trying so hard to win and dying to win. Yoor not playing a loose comfortable game. Things can change; and when they do it can be instantaneuos. Think in terms of small goals. If you have 40 bucks on there concentrate on making it to 50. Your putting to much pressure on yourself. Focus on playing well not the money. Lift weights or something before you play, get the agression out. I would play 1 dollar sitnngos 3 at a time. Dont be afraid of going bust here because its not even a roll. If you had 10k then worry about not going bust. cliche dont give up if you have a passion for the game.
-
i just succesfully tranfered you 20$, just have fun with the sht man, dont worry about the money just have a good time and play your game! glglglglgl

Honestly there are a couple of meta-game skills you should learn that will help you lose less when you're down and win more when you're up. I learned some of these skills before I ever deposited by playing play chips on FTP cash tables and scheduled MTT (multi table tournaments).
1. Bankroll Management. I built my roll up over 2 million play chips before I allowed myself to deposit $50. Since you can reload so easily, you can bust your roll many times before you learn how not to bust it.
2. Tilt Control. I made the mistake of playing bigger to "win it back" with play chips, so I already knew not to do that with real money. I also played lots and lots of hands with people who played garbage hands (its play chips, why not) which helped me understand how often 53s will actually beat QQ. So it doesn't bother me much when it happens now at higher real money stakes.
Also, FTP has 500,000 play chip tournaments with real money prizes. I wasn't rolled for those so I never played them though.
Good luck and stick with it! -
THANKS to every body with the advice it realy is helping me to understand this alot more i been reading more and more articles been watching the WSOP like a religion i mean the only true physical actitys i like r weight lifining and im not a big sports fan ...i take poker to be my SPORT lol
To every body that gave me that great advice i hope u read this to get my thanks ! and if any body ever needs anything from me i ll try to help my best im only good at fixing computers and weight lifting so i guess ill help the best i can
Thanks agian guys ! -
Good luck man. I can't add anything, but will echo the sentiments of many here: Play in your BR, read up on strategy, numb yourself to tilt, stay focused and alert.
I started with a small bankroll myself, and although I still play small stakes, they're not as small as they used to be. It's possible to claw your way up, but really the most important goal is to enjoy yourself and appreciate the game! -
Well, it sounds like OP is pissed about losing, and needs some help to avoid tilt.
Well, one thing that helps is to have other hobbies. You say poker is your only entertainment at home. Have DVD's your want to watch. Have video games you want to play, or books you want to read. Have something that you enjoy doing that isn't poker. It's a lot easier to pull yourself away from losing if, 5 minutes after, your having fun doing something else (of course, this is a double edge sword, there will be days then that you don't play because you'd rather do your other hobbies).
The other best thing to do is to keep good records of your play. When you lose $20 at a game, if you see over the last 4 months that you made $120 playing it (and your ROI over that time is still high), it'll help smooth the losses (which, as others have pointed out, are inevitable). -
yeah i love movies just need to get my self a dvd player waiting till XMAS to get one since i have abunch a dvds in a big cd binder that i wanta watch so once that gets going ill have that on the side to keep me entertained but thats alot im gonna start marking my wins and losses from now on
-
take your bankroll to a ring game, wait for a monster hand and double up.
peace. jk
