Some call him a donk that just got lucky. Some say that Jerry’s praying at the table was a joke and pointless. Some say that God has no place in poker. Some say Poker is just of game of reads, probabilities and skill etc. Whatever your opinion about Jerry and his W.S.O.P. win, I am here to tell you why he won.
The majority of people will not believe what I am going to say. That’s fine.
There are 4 reasons he won.
- His Character: Jerry was a humble and caring man who was not selfish at all and who genuinely cared about people. (10% of his winnings went to charity)
- His Faith: Jerry is a Christian. He believed God would make him win the tournament. (Jerry quote: “C’mon Lord, let people see your miracles”)
- His Actions: Jerry wasn’t the most skilled player at the final table but he was definitely the most aggressive. Sometimes he did the wrong move and sometimes he did the right move. Regardless of his skill level, Jerry was producing actions based on faith in the face of fear.
- He asked in Jesus' name. (most Important one)
Many people believe in Jesus but unfortunately these same people don’t believe anything Jesus has to say.
Jesus said that anything you ask for in his name he will give it. If someone truly believes what Jesus says, that someone will act upon it. Faith without actions is not faith.

Everything I wrote here is true. On March 30, 2008 there is the $1000.00 dollar buy-in for the Sunday Million. I am going to win it. As you can see this post is done on the 27th of March so I can show others how it’s done. I am writing this for the people with eyes to see and ears to hear. Please follow. -
actually the reason he won was because hilm made a huge mistake by folding the queens
but whatever yeah god did it
edit: you wont win the Sunday Million since God already told me I was going to win anyway
sorry -
I hope that this is a joke. Jesus never said "that anything you ask for in his name he will give it" and if he did say that he meant that he would give you everything in the afterlife. Obviously if that were true every Christian would be rich, would win every poker tournament and would never die of disease or sickness, or anything.

overly religious ppl are the scariest ppl imo

Jerry Yang might have been gifted that day by Jesus, yes. Maybe he got rewarded I dunno. Gold won it cause his daddio was dying and since God taketh, he shall giveth. God knew Jamie had to give half to his friend, and the other half to pay for his dad's illness. You won't win any mtt because of praying to Jesus. Jesus didn't play poker. He would not want all the people to be rich and then not spend it on anyone else. 2 people I know donate to charity. Poker gods are not the same as Jesus.

If you really believe this is why he won then you are a fanatic. Confidence and aggression do have a lot to do with his win, but god? Come on. Jamie Gold wasn't praying to god at the final table and I don't recall him ever even thanking god for his win.
There have been many people who have won tournaments without believing in god, WSOP included. Granted I agree that Yang's beliefs helped him to win, but that is because I believe that his desire to win was not based in self so he was able to leave his ego out of his decision making, much the way Jamie Gold, and many other's have won. He was also probably very in touch with his instincts and made a lot of decisions based on feel. Certain situations felt right and other's wrong and he acted upon this which I believe is as powerfull as analytical thinking.
Yang's christian belief's may have given him the foundation and principles to succeed but I really don't think any god intervened with the cards or outcome in any way. I think that non christians with the right principles and belief systems would have a similar advantage.
If you really plan on winning the sunday million then you should think about this. Don't play more than you can afford to lose, and good luck. -
I was raised christian and still am an active christian but...can you tell me why god lets me run so poorly on FTP and continuously get sucked out. Can god tell me why my roi on stars is around 120% but on full tilt it is -93%!!

I would hope God isn't concerned with a poker tournament.

Jerry Yang after winning the Main Event: "Dear Jesus, thank you for making those other guys lose."
-
^^^^God setting things right for the slow roll of the blind guy.
-
He won because he was aggressive and he got lucky and more importantly Damage1 wasnt old enough to play in it yet.
