I decided to play the $30 NLH Mini Ftops event last Sunday and ended up FT'ing it.
What I didn't realize while registering was the slow structure and the 21,000 runners. We started 9pm UK time and the final table was still 7 handed when it was 10.30 on Monday morning and I really had to go to work. That Monday was no ordinary day at work, I kept getting emails from clients and coworkers asking where the f*** I am and I couldn't call in sick or anything as I had to be there for a transaction I was leading.
I was second in chips at the time and ended up getting around 90bbs allin against the chip leader with pocket tens (he obv had aces). Everyone at the FT was buffled and I assume especially the shortstacks were very happy for the jump in pay. I got 15k for 6th place and 1st was paying 90k and with the way I was playing (and the way others were playing) I was really confident I could have closed it.
This is obv very frustrating after playing for 14h straight and makes you question what you're doing. I mean I really have a nice job which pays well but it is also a very demanding job and I wonder what I could achieve if I can give poker my full attention and time.
Anyway, I was really gutted about this situation and wanted to share, I guess I should know better next time and not register for tourneys starting beyond a certain time when I have work next day.
I'm gonna crush this Sunday to recover monies :).

dont quit till you can buy islands..ok..

i personally didn't reg for this cause i knew i had to work, but you're saying you stacked off loosely because you had to get to work? I don't know if I read that right, but regradless if I could or could not call off I would certainly come up with some type of excuse if I was at a final table like that.......
-
I would fabricate an obituary before I would make any different of a play because of work. Fortunately I can do my entire job from home, including sales and transactions and such so I would be able to take off, enjoy my winnings and still get work done :)

I'm looking forward to it :) -
yes that's exactly what I'm saying, it was clearly an absurd play given the stack sizes and short stacks at the table and I wouldn't have made it if I wasn't in a hurry to go to work. It was I think the 170k-340k level, I had around 27 million chips and the chipleader who had around 30mil 3bet my open to 3mil and I shoved all 27 in there...

next time just sitout and blind off and move up a few spots
-
just say you got in a car accident, or someone hit you while you were walking :P tons of excuses out there...
-
seriously, what do you do if you bink the 10 there?
1, don't play poker tournaments if you can't play them through to the end.
2, congrats on the score
3, yeah if you had that many bbs you could probably have folded to 3rd or so
4, mobile broadband ftmfw. -
I honestly shivered at the thought of playing for that much money and having people emailing me as to where the fuck I was. You HAVE to focus 100% at that point and to have all those distractions is so tilting. So shitty man I feel for you. Nice score though.

you say your job is demanding but pays very well......you dont think poker is going to be demanding as well? a lot of stuff changes when youre just playing for some extra side money to playing for a living and some ppl either go through those changes and have a hard time or some cant make it all. also, having some mild success is nice and what not but if you actually think you can maintain or improve your lifestyle from what it is now then go for it, if not, dont

You should probably not quit your day job, because this play sounds awful.
-
You needed to make a lock decision an hour or two earlier. Either you were going to have to commit to your job and sit out eventually or you were going all in, fuck the job, any excuse will do, I'm playing this FT all the way out.
Your mistake was you wanted both in a half ass kinda way.
The tens were not horribad IMO. I got flamed for saying DJK stacked off in a spewy way in the wcoop main with his tens and that was for like a million dollars. -
About the most -EV thing you can do in poker is to is to play a tournament that you can't play to the end.
That one win could have set your poker bankroll up for a year, maybe more. That is a potentially huge win in a tournament where you need the poker gods to favor you. You just won't get that many opportunities at a big payday to absolutely piss one away.
I guess it's a nice score, but MTT pros talk about how you live and die on top 3 finishes. You had a chance to get there, and you gave it away. Sure, the shorty's are happy. Everyone is sort of happy there, especially the chip leader who can now run roughshot over the table.
I think you had to know early on that you couldn't play all the way through. You really should have made arrangements either to go out much earlier, or have someone cover your screen for you. Honestly, having your wife just sit there, and wait for pocket facecards, and then get all her chips in would have been better than doing this. -
dont do it

omfg, i got a sick feeling in my stomach reading this. are you kidding? you can't just say i'll be in 2 hours late today? loooooooool at blowing 74k to show up on time 1 day.
-
If you have a good job that pays well, then you probably shouldn't even consider quitting for poker. But ffs, next time you're in that situation.. lie to your work, take the day off, and ship the fucking money bro.

Page 2 and no one suggested PM'ing Sorel yet?
The correct play was to throw yourself down a flight of stairs...you were knocked unconscious for a period of time so you couldn't call 911 right away. Nice hospital visit, legit excuse for not being at work.
As played, you should now throw yourself down a flight of stairs for blowing a shot at 90k.
