Hi,
I read in an article that if you make the money in the WSOP you should tip the dealers, cashier and floor staff.
So does everybody who makes the money do this? is there a line of winnings to determine if you should or shouldn't.
what is the general rule of thumb? -
Like harrah's isn't taking enough of the money...
-
I would imagine winner would.
-
Sick brag about making the money? or just a dream your having?
-
i would tip only if final table
-
<<<Used to be a dealer
I would tip only if FT as well.
Something in the neighborhood of 3-5% should be standard. On a regular weekly or daily tournament, it's nice if it's closer to 8-10%. Tipping the floor is LOL and throw the cashier a 10. -
its funny how many people think that that % of the prize pool is all for the dealers. after everyone gets their cut the dealers get fucked. its the floor people at the series that are getting the majority of that money. keep in mind that if tipping goes down then so will the quality of dealers. i have a good job as a dealer in vegas and working for harrahs at the series would be last on my list for the simple fact that its not worth my time and energy to deal to a bunch of stiff internet players who say that harrahs is taking out more than enough. if you think i am the only one that thinks this way you are wrong. dealing is a service just like bartending, and waiting. i don't think everything should be 10% but would you stiff the bartender who is selling drinks at 500% markup at the bar? would you stiff the waitress? so why stiff the dealer?
-
I personally think tipping has gotten out of hand. Gotta tip 1$ for a bartender to open up my beer, 3$ for a pot because the dealer flipped over the cards. So tired of people who chose to not use their degree or even got one in the first place making more money than me.
-
this is a bit off topic but I was playing 1/2 live cash and some middle aged man opened pre and TID and won $3 on the hand and tipped the dealer $1.

no brag, i had a vision! lol
2012 i will make the money in a wsop event.
i just bring it up because it seems to be an area of ambiguity.
in australia, tipping isn't a custom such as it is in america (im lead to believe), not just talking poker btw.
i'll tip in the hospitality industry, if and only if the service is worthy of a tip. if it's not i most certainly will not tip. i also think this may come down to minimum wage being much better in australia, not sure though.
maybe we're just tightarses! -
I tip good dealers more than crap ones. Nothing tilts me more then some dipshit in the box telling poker storys and making jokes. Deal the cards; be effecient and move the game along and I'll tip. I dont tip bad dealers near as much.
-
ok, thanks for the info.
and the tip goes to the floor staff, or dealers, or cashiers, or everybody?
some have said no to floor staff, some have said to dealers. -
No it's not. Dealing is doing your job. Doing a good job should be the norm and not the exception. A waitress or bartender offers personal service. Yes, it is their job, but the good ones go out of their way to earn that tip.

Dealers do deserve a tip, but only because we all know that they are being screwed by their employer. Any dealer that offers me better service may get a bigger tip from me, but lynched by the mob he helped to create.
There are other dealers in the casino that actually do go out of their way to earn their tips, such as those at blackjack or craps. They actually spend some time with the noobs helping them with correct decisions, while helping their bosses at the same time. If the noob had a good time, he'll not only tip but return. -
ill tip you 25% cuz u had such a huge bearing on me winning that money... oh wait dealers dont do shit except their fucking job... what they are supposed to do
-
IF there were no dealers at the WSOP or any poker room for that matter there would be no poker at all. LOL at the not giving you a personal service as a dealer the waitress is just doing HER JOB TOO by delivering your ass drinks and having you slobber all over her cause she is way out of your league so to impress her you ship her 5 bucks everytime. LMAO dealers get paid minimum wage to deal and live on tips go ahead and not tip us and ill promise you that everytime you come to the table and they remember you they will be rooting against you and hoping the live doomswitch is turned on. Get a life dude. Fucking hate losers like you that dont tip and have such a shitty atitude if you dont want to tip the dealer then dont tip anyone valet, waitress, floor man to get u in the game faster, coat check hotel, any of it. you obviously need the 5 bucks way more than a dealer ever will you cheap piece of shit
-
Tipping is really a joke. Why tip someone who is already being paid to provide a service? Tips allows the employer to pay that worker even less. Tips should not be standard. It should be for those that actually provide their service well. The question about tipping should not be "how much?" meaning its standard, but "should I tip?"
-
I believe tipping came along to encourage quality service by those being paid minimum wage (and btw it's illegal to make less than minimum wage so they are making minimum wage at the worst). If tipping is standard, then it has lost its purpose.
-
Did I make a wrong turn on the Internetz and wind up at this other poker forum where this goes back and forth for pages on end? haha
I would break off a little, but not an amount that would be suitable for a meal/bar tab. More like a few percent, MAX. -
the thing that pisses me off with the hole craps/blackjack dealers and tipping is 95% of the time they have NO idea where you stand money wise, unless the pitboss or one running the computer says something.
i was playing craps other night at rio and a guy left the table with $2600 and just walked away, no lie NO LIE within 20 seconds of him leaving all 3 craps dealers (not including the 1 that was infront of the computer) started talking shit about this guy not leaving anything, so i said something to the one guy i knew who was the dealer and asked how much was he in for.
the guy replied "he was in for $2,000 when i went on break about 30 minutes ago" i mean how stupid is that? if a guy is in for ATLEAST 2k to your knowledge and left with 2600, dont be ignorant, he coulda been in for 3k 4k or 2k who knows, the point is, he wasnt in for $500 and you dam well fucking knew it. then they just start talking shit on him. stupid fucking people.
heres another story, i was playing that texas hold em bonus game, i had $380 in red chips ($5) and i just won a hand and she threw me a $25 green chip along with a few reds, so i nicely said can i please change this in for nickels i dont want a quarter chip, she throws it back infront of me and says "you have plenty of reds already" i said ok cash me in please and ill be sure to not leave you anything. SHIT LIKE THAT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH!!!! I HAVE YET TO REALLY REALLY REALLY MEET A GOOD CRAPS/BJ/ROULETTE ETC DEALER THAT GIVES A FUCK TO EARN TIPS. atleast dealers for poker lately i have noticed say "thank you very much i appreciate it" whether it is sincere or not, atleast they are fucking trying.
one more story. i was at palazzo playing the DONTs in craps and i was crushing it, up almost $3400 off my initial $300 buy in, but the ENTIRE FUCKING TIME all the craps dealers including the suit n tie guy in the middle, were giving me such a hard time. just constantly saying comments and blaming me for slowing down the game if i asked a question about laying odds or watever...FUCK EM
either way i think its up to you and no one really knows what you have been thru for the night, if the dealers have been fucking you 2 outter 3 outter left n right and YOU had to grind urself back into it, then fuck em they didnt do shit but make it more difficult. if they card racked you in the face then tip em please. if you arent down meeeeellions of dollars and you made something a tip is ok and up to you based on service and attitude.
if i made $5000 at the craps table and i was in for $500 and the dealers were all assholes to me, i wouldnt leave a fucking penny -
Actually, judging from your response, it sounds to me like you need the 5 bucks more then we do.
Not only "WOULD" there be poker without dealers, there already HAS been poker without dealers. Wrong again. In fact, without poker players, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE YOUR JOB. Does that mean you should tip me?
And man, I feel really sorry about you making minimum wage plus 20 bucks an hour in tips. Hard life you have. If you cant live on that, what about all those people who make minimum wage and NO TIPS?
My problem in tipping in tournies is the the fact that I am tipping people who provide no service to me. My tip does not simply go to the good dealers I had; it goes to the entire pool of dealers/staff. So not only am I tipping 100 dealers who i never saw or spoke a word to, but my tip is also forced to go to any bad dealers who I may have had is well. Why should I be forced to tip when the vast majority of that tip is going to people who either performed poorly or did not give me any service whatsoever? -
I want to do an Andy Rooney rant too....

I do tip the hot waitress because she is hot and wears clothes that show off her goods; even if it's just an illusion. As for $5, no I'm not an idiot; it is more thought, than if it was a dude that brought me a drink...
I hate people who don't use breaks in their thoughts, so that everyone can read the post better...And that think think everytime is a word; no they are two separate ones.
As for the valet/parking lot attendant...I tip them to watch my car and get it there before other. The maitre 'd because he gets me a better table. And the floorman because he does get me a table faster.
You as a dealer do your job. I will tip you when I win a hand, not because you did anything to influence it (except not misdeal) but because I am overall a generous guy. I agree with what someone posted before; I won't tip you if you're telling stories/crackin' jokes and slowing down the game. If you want to do, save it for when you're dealing blackjack.
Finally if you don't like making minimum wage and relying on tips, get a different job. Plus if you even hint at wanting a tip you don't get a single dollar from me, I know when and what I should tip....
And please don't root against me or I don't know what I'd do...
