I dont think poker is an addiction, its better than watching TV, x-box, drinking at bars w lots of dudes and ugly chicks with tattoos who think they're hip. In 92 we had a name for them -Ugly chicks. Its better than strip clubs, bowling and miniature golf. Its better than the Bachelorette, dancing with the stars, and World of Warcraft.
Its better than Chess, backgammon, Statego, risk, monopoly. Axis and Allies is pretty cool though.
Its not as cool as writing a book, a screenplay, a song, starting a rockabilly or jazz band.
Its funner than trying to get knowledgeable in a marketable skill such as law, medicine, finance, or a viable trade.
Its not as cool as going out with a beautiful and classy smart and sweet lady. But they are rare and not enough of them for everybody.
And in poker you can win money. -
I like MarioKart and poker's even cooler than that.

Depends on how big of extremes you take it...everyone is addicted to something that prints money.

what's the distinction between addiction and obsession?
Is one better than the other?
discuss -
to dominate or preoccupy the thoughts, feelings, or desires of (a person) is obsession
Edited By: bef99hwk Aug 7th, 2010 at 05:20 AM
to habituate or abandon (oneself) to something compulsively or obsessively is addict.
Seems to me obsession comes from addiction?
EDIT: But devoted or given up to a practice or habit or to something psychologically or physically habit-forming is addicted....so maybe obsessed is just constantly thinking about all the time, and addiction is actually DOING something?
EDIT II: To me, if I'm obsessed with poker, it seems less harmful. Ivey would always think about poker..while eating, sleeping, in the shower, etc he said in an interview. Addiction seems to be damaging healthwise, like a crack addict. You just have to play it to get satisfied, and without it, u'd go insane. -
poker is like being a squirrel in a room of terracotta vases. 10% of the vases have lots of nuts. 20% of the vases have nothing. 30% of the vases are heated in the bottom and burn your hand. and 40% of the vases are set up with this

nice read
but honestly most of humans i know are addicted to something... but when your addiction makes money for you, people start to see this as a 'passion', 'dedication', 'work' or whatever so it makes it usually much more socially accepted. i hope it makes sense. my english is not famous! -
Nothing wrong with being addicted if you get pleasure from it, and it does not harm you.
Lifes one gigantic gamble in so many ways.
Seek out as much pleasure as you can, before your knackered!
