  1. Thank you for getting in touch with me about internet gambling. It's good hear from you.

I appreciate hearing your views on this issue. As you may know, the Port Security Improvement Act (Public Law 109-347) included a provision that makes most online gambling illegal. It also prevents banks and credit card companies from making payments to gambling websites.

I understand your support for a proposal to license and regulate internet gambling websites. Your views will be helpful to me should this issue come before the full Senate.

I will always do my best to balance the need for individual freedom and policies that build strong communities.

Thanks again for getting in touch with me. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you in the future.

    Sincerely,
    Barbara A. Mikulski
  2. Pretty weak response from Senator Ben Cardin

Thank you for contacting me to express you views concerning online gambling. Internet gambling is a very controversial issue.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (P.L.109-347) amends the federal criminal code to prohibit people engaged in the business of betting or wagering from knowingly accepting credit, or the proceeds of credit, electronic fund transfers, checks, drafts, or similar financial instruments or the proceeds of any other financial transaction in connection with unlawful Internet gambling. There are exceptions for various forms of legalized intrastate gambling. For example, horse racing, state lotteries, and Indian casinos are all exempt from this Act.

Currently, there are no bills pending in the Senate regarding this issue. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can be of any further assistance.
