    By ferrengi - Jul 26 2009, 07:17 PM

Tonight I am playing the Stars 215 HORSE, 215 Omaha8 and 109 turbo.

Too bad there is no 100K GTD. I don't really get the logic of replacing it with the 215+R. Wouldn't people be willing to play in both? They could run a $162 with no guarantee and just let people play.

This is a weird hand from the stud round of the 215 HORSE.

I don't understand what villain is leading with on 4th and raising on 5th. The only hand that makes sense is a str8 but it is so unlikely for him to have that.

The ace on 6th clinched it. I can no longer beat 2 pair and I have only 2 outs to make a FH.

I checked the turn to try and keep the pot small. I still thought I had the best hand but I figured it was better to check. The problem is, I am out of position. So, I have no idea if villain is sensing weakness and trying to steal the pot or if they really started with an overpair or hit the str8. So, I'm stuck calling 200 here. A better play would've been to make a my own turn bet and see what villain does. If I get raised, I can toss the hand and survive with most of my stack intact.

The river card really doesn't change anything and again I have the same dillema. As played, I think folding the river is a good idea. The bet is too large and it is kind of too unlikely that he has me beat.

    Oh well...

Damn, I thought this was a good flop for me in O8. In retrospect, maybe I should not raise the turn because I do not have the nuts for high and might get quartered or counterfeited on the river.

Weird hand against a relative unknown player. I know he's been very aggressive preflop and reraised him a few times. I couldn't understand how he can call on the turn without a diamond in his hand unless he wants to gamble his entire stack that I'm bluffing. Because he should expect that if I have the flush, I will put him all-in on the river.

Villain had been active in late position so I figured my K8 could be ahead preflop. The flop is kinda draw heavy but it is unlikely that he has something here. A flop bet followed by a turn bet should be enough to take it down.

Unfortunately, he hit the 9 so he was never considering folding. I'm finding it hard to play limit holdem out of position. Maybe I should only be reraising out of position with real premium hands and play a little more conservatively postflop depending on what comes on the flop and any reads I may have.

  • Playing the 100K GTD and 109 HORSE tonight

    By ferrengi - Jul 25 2009, 08:42 PM

I'm playing the Stars 100K GTD and 109 HORSE tonight (as well as some stud cash. People usually play very badly on Saturday night.)

I'm off to good start in the 100K already.

I reraised because of the draws on the board and to see if he really had a monster. I didn't think it made sense to reraise all in because I am unlikely to get called by a one pair hand.

Another interesting hand, villain had been playing a lot of hands and raising it up from early position. In a prior hand he 4 bet me  all in with KQo vs my QQ and sucked out.

He was taking a long time in the hand and definitely made it look like he had a decision PF and on the flop. I think he either had an overpair or AJ. Maybe he had a set of 7s. I didn't want to try and bluff again on the turn while the flush draw was out there and have him get committed to the hand. Unfortunately, that opened up for him the possibility of moving all in on the river no matter what comes.

Well, after this hand I stopped picking up good hands except for 1 time that I got AQ in SB and I picked up only the blinds.

I tried to hang on and keep picking spots to move all-in but eventually I pushed with 97o from the CO and got called by TT. Out in 101st, gg.

  • So I decided to play the $109 HORSE after all

    By ferrengi - Jul 23 2009, 08:48 PM

I join the Stars $109 HORSE when they were up to razz.
I got some good hands in razz but didn't do well in stud and stud8.

    I think I misplayed a few stud8 hands.

I missed a few bets in the following hand:

I don't like betting in to boards that show 3 to low and a possible str8. But, in hindsight, villain might not have started with 3 low cards or he might have paired up.

In the next hand, it shouldn't have taken me so long to realize that my idiot opponent had started with split 5s and now hand trip 5s. It should've been clear after he reraised on 4th:

  • Playing 10/20 stud and tourneys on Stars

    By ferrengi - Jul 23 2009, 06:14 PM

I've been playing a lot of 7 card stud cash games on stars lately. Been doing pretty well at the 10/20 limit. I'd like to take another crack at 30/60 once I bring my roll up to 12K.
The players at the stud tables are so bad even at the 10/20 level. So many calling stations and people just playing trash.

Also, I'll be playing the $109 turbo at 8:30pm EST and the nightly 100K. So I may post some tourney hands.
My best showing in these tourneys is 2nd in the $109 turbo (before the 1 hour long late registration) and 17th in the 100K.
Hopefully, I'll have some interesting hands to post from the cash games and tourneys.

    Well,
The 109 turbo started and I have two players I recognize at sketchy1 and truesyalose.
Hopefully, I will not be at this table long because I want to turn up the aggression once we start with the antes.

Truesyalose and sketchy1 just got moved :)

I decided to 3 bet this guy that's been raising a lot of pots early on

I figured villain was either on a stone bluff or could have an ace with a weaker kicker.
I guess I should probably just call because A8 or A7 makes him a full house so there are not that many weaker aces left.

Well, somehow I am still in this thing. I've been pushing quite a bit but finally a hand came up where I had to play postflop.

I was considering pushing pre but I figured I'll definitely get called and I'm probably facing a better hand. Villain had just gotten moved to the table so no reads.
I was going to move in if the flop came low cards. However, since I hit my king, I figured there was no point in betting. I'll only get called if I'm beat but I may be able to induce a bluff and that's exactly what happened.

Unfortunately, I got knocked out of the tourney a few hands later. I open pushed K6o from the button and got raised all-in by 8-8 and lost.

After that, an interesting hand came up with the 100K:

My thought process was that the button might be bluffing and I'd like to see what the rest of the field is going to do. If they get out of the way, there is a good chance I have the best hand. I did not like the fact that the K came on the turn. I figured that this card was likely to help my opponent. I didn't think he would make another large bet with a bluff so I laid it down.

In the meantime, I've been getting killed in 7 card stud tonight. Been missing every draw and getting chased down every time I have a high pair. I'm down almost 2 buyins. No more 7 card stud for me tonight.

I wonder if I missed a value bet on the river in the following hand. I thought he wouldn't call with a worse hand but after seeing what he showed down, I'm not so sure.

Right after this hand, I screwed up bigtime and violated part of my creed which is not to make big bluffs early in the tourney. This is for a few reasons: There will usually be a lot more fish in the first hour and they are near impossible to bluff against. Furthermore, not so much is known about my opponents at the beginning of the tourney so I'm basically bluffing and just hoping it will work. Also, the risk is usually not worth the reward. It's a lot better to raise or reraise preflop where there are antes involved and try to take down some pots that will really help build my stack.

Oh well, I thought this would be a good bluffing opportunity:

Looking back on the hand, I think it is OK to fold this pre. Raising preflop is building the pot with a substandard hand out of position. Even though my hand is probably better than a random hand in the BB, I don't think it is that much better that this move is warranted. Anyway, on this flop, I figure I can take it down with a small cbet. When villain called, I did not put him on a Q, I figured he could have a couple of high cards or a flush draw. I decided that instead of trying to bluff again, I'll just check to him and see what he does. When he bet out, I smelled weakness so I tried to represent the Q with my check min-raise. This move also did not work and I really should've shut it down there. At the time, I was thinking that I cannot win this hand if we go to showdown so I better try one more time to bluff. Of course I cannot call once he pushes. It appears that villain did in fact have the Q all along.

Just a terribly played hand on every street.

I busted shortly after that. I raised with AQ and the BB decided to called with 52s and the board came Q52. We got it all-in on the turn. Oh well.

Not a good night at all.
The only other tourney I might play is the 109 HORSE.
I'm going to take it easy for a bit right now and cool off and see how I feel.
With the extended registration the 3K starting stack, I could register an hour in to the tourney and it wouldn't really matter.
