  • Closing Out a Tourney.

    Sep 07 2008, 08:28 AM

So early this morning, after 4 hours and about 45 mins I finished 1st in a $1 razz tourney for a ~$50 first place finish.

For most players, the amount of money won is laughable and irrelevant.

However, the importance of the ability to close a tourney is one that can't be overlooked, or denied. Granted here the buy-in is small and the field is small, hence delivering a small return. But the skill necessary to reach the final table and secure victory is one that resonates to any level. Alot of players enter tournaments with the goal of cashing. Just to make it ITM, they feel justified in their ventures.

I don't know about you, but whenever I spend 5-6+ hours in a tourney only to make about double the buy-in or to just bubble a final table, it's enfuriating. I play to win. When I enter a tourney, before it even begins, when I view the lobby all that matters to me is the amount of entrants and 1st place money. While obviously $50 isnt alot, %4900 ROI is something i'll gladly take to any tourney, regardless it's buy-in.

Players, especially in the micro-stakes arena I fight in, are delusional about tournament play, totally ok with cashing, totally engulfed in the vanglorious lights and camera show of the WSOP and just wanting to play poker with no real goals. And that's fine with me. I like dead money. :)

  • Getting Back on the x.x.R.S.E

So it was only two days ago that I opened PokerStars via my Start Menu, and decided that I was ready to jump back into the fray of Online Poker. I have done alot of introspective viewing into myself, and after a long look into my history as a Poker player, I realized one thing. I suck.

Anybody who looks at my results with any seriousness would undoubtedly get a hardly laugh out of it ( minus one lucky break I received right when I started online poker, a singular Four Figure payday [which was actually five figures via a two player split pot deal] ) Ever since then, i've been downhill in poker, and it's been for one reason. I absoulutely blow at No Limit Texas Hold Em. And dont even mention Omaha. Pfft. There's simply something about the game that books and books and books have not been able to get through my skull. I cannot generate any plausable successs at this game.

    However....

While I was searching through my results, I did come across a startling discovery. I had done pretty damn well at "other games". Then a light bulb flashed. " Everybody's playing NLHE. It's pretty much poker as the public defines it. I suck at it, but seem to be pretty decent at these other type games....hmmm..."

So when I hit the deposit button on PStars, I decided that I was sticking with Other games and other Games alone. I'm reading my books again and this time I'll actually see was Todd Brunson has to say about Stud Hi/Lo.

My results in 1 day of playing since my deposit:

Limit Razz: 216 Entries, Finished 13th

    Limit Stud Hi/Lo 192 Entries, Finished 6th.

Maybe I will be hopping back on this H.O.R.S.E. after all....minus the H.O.

    Who needs those anyway. :P
