Bakes Leads PocketFivers on WSOP Main Event Day 1C

By Dan | Published Jul 06 2008, 08:19 AM
It was a busy Saturday at the 2008 World Series of Poker. Some of the most well-known PocketFivers entered the Rio in Las Vegas looking for riches from one of the largest live poker tournaments ever held. In the field today, among others, were Gary GB2005 Bogdanski, Eric basebaldy Baldwin, Matt mattg1983 Graham, Scott SCTrojans Freeman, Eric Rizen Lynch, Adam Roothlus Levy, Sorel Imper1um Mizzi, and David DavidP18 Peters. In the end, David Bakes Baker (pictured at right) led the way for PocketFivers, finishing Day 1C with a chip stack of 153K. All of the action was covered on PocketFivesLive.com, your source for WSOP coverage of online poker players.

David Bakes Baker held a rousing 153K chips after the final cards were dealt on Saturday night. He’s ranked 21 on the PocketFives.com Worldwide Rankings. At the end of May, he took second in the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up for $53,793.86. In January, he took down the $100 rebuy on PokerStars for $40,750. In tournaments that are tracked for the PocketFives.com Rankings, Baker banked nearly $120,000 in May. Collson commented, “How good was Baker running on Saturday? While he was sitting as one of the chip leaders with nearly 130K, the gorgeous Liv Boeree filled the seat to his left. Baker completely rolled over a table with Clonie Gowen and Alex Jacob during the evening, opening nearly every pot pre-flop and winning as many as six hands in a row at one point. He's going to be a force in Day 2.”

Sorel Imper1um Mizzi (pictured at right) continued his impressive showing as of late. He headed to the buffet after Level 3 with 65K chips after two key pots. He turned a flush and scooped up a massive pot with 8-10 suited. In the very next hand, Mizzi edged out his opponent’s A-9 holding A-Q on an ace-high board. Mizzi has established himself as a feared online and live pro. He chopped the Irish Poker Open for more than €500,000 and, at the same time, has logged a string of impressive finishes in the Full Tilt Online Poker Series. In December, he took down the $100 rebuy on PokerStars for $45,275. Mizzi ended the day with 85K chips.

Among those in the field today was Chad lilholdem954 Batista, who made his presence felt early. He found himself calling an all-in with A-9 of diamonds. His opponent held pocket eights. The first card off the deck was an eight, shaving Batista’s chip stack. He began calling the opponent who won a “fish,” prompting floor officials to intervene. However, no warning was given to Batista and the play continued. The second ranked player on PocketFives.com has had multiple wins in the Full Tilt $1k Monday, the PokerStars $100 Rebuy, and an outright victory in the FTP $750K Guaranteed. Batista won a $5,000 buy-in WSOP Circuit Event tournament at Caesars Indiana for $262,002 in 2006. Last year, at the Main Event of the same Circuit Event, he finished fifth. Batista busted out during the day.

PocketFivesLive.com Tournament Reporter Brett Collson commented on Batista’s play: “Chad's temper got the best of him Saturday, but from what we've seen during this World Series he's been nothing but pleasant. He's certainly entertaining to watch, both due to his aggressive style and eccentric personality.”

Brian tsarrast Rast (pictured at left) finished with 76K chips. In March, he finished third in the PokerStars Sunday Million for $73,490. He was the lone PocketFiver to cash in Event #28, a $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha with Rebuys tournament. He had just one WSOP cash prior to 2008.

PocketFivesLive.com Reporter Court Harrington also played in Day 1C. His opponent held A-7 on a flop of 7-7-5 when Harrington held pocket queens. He was sent to the rails during the fourth level of play.

Ladbrokes pro Jonas Danielsson, who was down to 18,000 chips at the ever-popular dinner break, ended the day with a 79K chip stack. PocketFivesLive.com Tournament Reporter Jill Harrison commented, “Danielsson must have installed a magnet under his table at the dinner break because his count skyrocketed during Level 4. When we caught up with Jonas' table, he had gone from a less-than-average 18K stack to more than 78K in chips through tight-aggressive deep-stacked play. We saw Jonas raise several hands pre-flop, but the table gave him major respect each time, folding to his action.”

BigHog1, Congrats on making it to Day 2! We've updated the final chip counts to include you. We'd be happy to cover your progress during Day 2, and it would really help our P5's Live Reporters if you could register for coverage here: http://www.pocketfiveslive.com/register/ Thanks for letting us know you're still in, and hopefully more P5'ers will register for coverage. It's impossible for us to know every P5'er in the events because we're not familiar with everyone's real name. Best of luck the rest of the way and we hope to see you at the final table in November!
