PocketFivesLive: World Poker Finals Main Event Preview

By Court | Published Nov 02 2008, 06:39 AM |

As the calendar year comes closer and closer to an end, the number of major live poker tournaments left for 2008 are also thinning out.  With major holidays on the horizon there is a drop-off in tournaments during November and December before things crank back up full force in early January.

For PocketFivesLive.com the last two stops of 2008 are at two of the long standing bastions of live poker tournaments.  In November, PocketFivesLive will cover the World Poker Finals at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, which always brings heavy turnout with a mix of pros, locals, and satellite winners.  The East Coast location, within a relatively short distance of multiple major population centers, brings out many players that don’t make it to any other events.

Last year the November Foxwoods tournament brought out a hefty 575 players who put up the $10k buy-in to play in the event with Mike Vela ending up as the champion after defeating Nick TheTakover Shulman in heads up play.  Nick was hoping to add another Foxwoods title to go along with his victory there in November of 2005, but in 2007 he came up one spot short of the title.  Nenad Medic was also at last years final table to defend his 2006 title but his possible back to back victories ended with a 3rd place finish.

Along with the two previous winners making the final table, online phenom Tom Durrrr Dwan showed up at Foxwoods only 3 months after his 21st birthday and proceeded to make the final table and end up in 4th place.  Dwan has been a staple at live tournaments ever since and has continued to earn the respect of the regulars on the tournament trail.

PocketFivers Jonathan FatalError Aguiar (17th), Matt mattg1983 Graham (21st), and Steve SteveDakota Happas (33rd) were also among the players that made the money in the 2007 World Poker Finals at Foxwoods.

After covering the World Poker Finals in November PocketFivesLive will then finish up the year at the Bellagio for the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic.  The WPT Main Event there will run from December 13th through December 19th.

You can register for coverage on PocketFivesLive.com using the Let Us Cover You! link in the toolbar on the left side of the page.  Be sure to highlight which tournament you are registering for in the dropdown list.
