This week's Podcast features an interview with Gregory 'DuckU' Hobson, winner of back-to-back Sunday major tournaments on FullTiltPoker.com.
Greg Hobson's consecutive wins in the FullTilt $750,000 Guaranteed and $400,000 Guaranteed Sunday tournaments is being dubbed as one of the greatest accomplishments in Online Poker history. Today's multi-table tournament scene is comparable to no other time in the past - as thousands of players enter large buy-in Sunday tournaments across the major sites seeking a six-figure score. Only a couple of years ago, top prizes in these types of tournies hovered around $30,000. "DuckU" won nearly a quarter million dollars over a span of seven days.
Gregory fits a pattern that many successful online poker players have in similar. He's paid his dues at the cash games, currently winning at $10/$20 No Limit Holdem, he's well educated (holding a Master's Degree) and is emotionally capable of weathering the all-familiar storms and trials that the game of poker presents any player. Not one to get ahead of himself or make rash decisions, Greg is content remaining at the $10/$20 NL level for now since it is the most comfortable venue for him to be profitable at. While some players would feel the urge to gamble it up and play at higher stakes, Greg doesn't take his wife or current financial security for granted.
Most Podcast guests have another ingredient in common: they enjoy loving support from their friends and family. Having someone who believes in you as a player is a huge advantage for any rising star - regardless of age. Our listeners will be able to hear a success story from a player who has followed the common-sense path to winning at poker.
Before signing-off this week, we had an opportunity to speak with longtime PocketFiver Jay Elday (fondly known as 'Murderer' here on the site.) Jay has managed to make a considerable income from online tournament play, despite holding down a full-time job as a financial adviser for a company in South Hampton. When he's not playing the occasional tournament, he's performing his duties as a volunteer forum moderator at PocketFives. His comical contributions to the Off Topic Forum are legendary... his posts are among the most popular... yet his (not so) clandestine e-Bay auctions have been condemned.
