2005 Presto Awards Recap

By Adam | Published Feb 16 2006, 07:54 PM

The 2005 Presto Award winners have all received their plaques, and I want to take a few minutes here to go back over all the great people and achievements that led to the nominations.

Best Article

Though fox was the winner, we had a fantastic, entertaining, useful assortment of articles that got nominated for this one.  In the end, people picked Fox's Bankroll Management article, which reached out to players at all levels regarding the safe practices to insure that a winning player does not go broke.

Funniest Poster

The winner of this award was a P5er from day 1.  BigHems' bad beat posts have been a staple of our community for many months, and I hope he continues to entertain.  The other nominees also added a great deal to my personal enjoyment of this community, and reading all of their posts continues to be a regular part of my daily routine.

This one ended up being a runaway, although every player on this list was deserving of mention.  JohnnyBax just had such an incredible year from start to finish, and the voting shows that a large number of our users felt he was the best.  Congrats to all the nominees on a truly fantastic year.

Most Valuable Poster

Sheets won this one hands down, after sharing a lot of information with the community that is just flat out hard to find anywhere else.  Some highlights were the following blog entries on his experiences in player backing:

He has also recently posted the entire hand history of his final table in a $20 rebuy on PokerStars:

Accomplishment of the Year

JJProdigy's TLB win in August was one of the biggest stories in the history of online poker.  The el capitano account actually had a win in the Sunday $200, which is worth more than 1000 points more than JJ's biggest score that month, and following that, they had 6 top players playing on that account day in and day out.  To beat that team, along with all the other fantastic players who were vying for the title, was nothing short of spectacular.

Papoorboy's 3 major titles (and another FT) in a span of 6 weeks received more than a quarter of the votes as well, and it is an accomplishment that we are unlikely to see repeated any time soon.  In a very short time, he became one of the most well-known names in online poker.

Congrats to all of these guys for dazzling us with their amazing consistency in pulling off the big wins.

What was the greatest accomplishment for a P5er in online poker in the past year?

JohnnyBax wins the two biggest rebuys of the day on the same night in September - the Stars $45k guaranteed and the Dise $50k guaranteed. (6%)

JJProdigy wins the TLB on Stars in August, in the midst of the Gigabet TLB bet that had many top players, including a "team" of 6 players on one account, desperately trying to win the month. (37%)

iMsoLucky0 wins the $50k guaranteed on Empire, the $50k guaranteed on Dise, and a PartyPoker Million Satellite all on the same Sunday. He also takes 9th in the Dise $20k guaranteed and 2nd in a Party $100 NLHE tourney the same day. (21%)

Papoorboy/Kate Starbird has consecutive wins in the UB $150k guaranteed, followed by 10th and 12th place finishes, and then just 3 weeks later, he wins the Stars $500k guaranteed. (26%)

Brainwash reaches the final table of the big Sunday tourney on Stars 4 times in 2005, including a win in the $500, and also a 2nd place finish in the big Sunday tourney on Party. (6%)

Ozzy 87 (bigslick789 at the time) wins the afternoon $10 rebuy, finishes second in the $150, and then wins the $25k guaranteed on Stars, all in the same day. (4%)

We're looking forward to the 2006 Prestos, and I can only say I hope there will be more of the same.  We've got an amazing community here, and these awards can only begin to sum it up.
