Realize What Poker Is

By BonafideAdam | Published Jan 26 2008, 09:27 AM

You are a functioning member of society. As a human being you need a few things. According to Maslow, the first things we need are safety and food. He says that other needs cannot be satisfied unless the previous ones are met. Same thing goes for online poker. I'll explain.

If you are reading this, you have a computer with an internet connection, and you probably also have money on various poker sites. You may even have a few golden nuggets of poker wisdom inside your brain. But you are not a perfect player. In fact, most of you have probably rushed to online poker way too fast. It was blind indulgence. And while it didn't matter at first when you were playing $5 a game, you are now wagering significant money. Now is the time to realize what kind of a game poker is.

A good indicator in spotting a weak-minded player is if he mentions that the game is playing is "sick" or only a "degenerate" would play  a game like this. These players are hurting themselves. They are trying to be coy and subconsciously trying to desensitize themselves to the true horror of reality. A funny thing about reality: it is not real. Only what you perceive is real.

Label the game as a gentleman's game. A gentleman like yourself will expose him to the sharp hilarity of the luck factor, the crafty betting patterns of savant businessmen, and a keen eye for weakness. He will accept that downswings will happen and should happen, for all the universe is perfect in the end. Cards may be deemed unfit to play, and that's ok every time. Accept it if you want glory. He will accept that inexperienced, less keen players will occasionally take his chips. He will also accept that he himself has had the best of it, but not ALL of it. And he is delighted that it is this way.  For another man's amusement is to be shared. Courteous gestures and warm wide smiles will be greeted, as inside, this man is filled with enthusiasm. The poker table is an arena in which only fine gentlemen should play.
