They may not be flashy or loud--you might not even know who they are--but BamaEd and JOEYTHEB are two of the most consistent players you will find anywhere in the online tournament circuit, and neither of them really plays that much. You probably will not see these guys 10 tabling MTT's or making a run at the PocketFives.com Triple Crown. You certainly will rarely, if ever, hear them posting about their wins. You have to look a little deeper to see what they accomplish, but if you're willing to dig a little (or if you're an obsessive observer, like me), you will be impressed with what you find.
BamaEd doesn't play a ton of tournaments, but in the last month and a half, he has won the $50k guaranteed nightly tournament on Paradise twice, beating more than 600 people each time for prizes in the range of $14k. Those were his only two final tables in that tournament during that span, but he made them count.
The tournaments he plays most often are in the evening, particularly the $50k and "Pearl" ($150 buy in) on Dise and the $100s on Full Tilt. In a recent week, he had 3 final tables in the Full Tilt $100s, finishing 2nd twice and winning one.
While his success hasn't shown as much in the majors in the last few months, he has narrowly missed the final table of the $200 tournaments on Stars (LHE), Full Tilt (twice), and Paradise (twice) since August 1st.
One thing is for sure---when he gets to the final table, he's getting paid.
JoeyTheB has gotten a bit more press lately, but he's been putting up results for quite a while. In the last two months, however, he has just taken off, winning nearly $100k during one of the hottest streaks anyone has seen this year.
During that time, he has made the final table of the $20k guaranteed on Paradise 5 times and the $50k guaranteed 3 times. His best finish in each was 2nd.
Then we get to the "big" wins. Five (yes, five) $11.5k Foxwoods WPT packages. 3 firsts and a 2nd in the new daily "Atlantic" tournament, which is a $300 buy in that typically has a prizepool around $20k. 2 final tables in the $100k guaranteed. You start to get an idea of just how good this guy actually is.
There are plenty of players out there who are extremely successful while only playing a limited number of tournaments each week. It's just another facet of online poker---some people have time to play all day long, while others have to squeeze it into their schedule. With results like these, though, BamaEd and JOEYTHEB will be sure to keep finding the time to play.
About Adam
I was one of the original P5ers... Before this site existed, my friends Cal, Riley, and I were poker enthusiasts/railbirds who played primarily low stakes cash games and tournaments. We were all fresh off graduating from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, loved poker, and wanted to become a part of the poker world.
For years I managed the rankings system on this site and all of the content you would see on the front page. I now am mostly removed from the day-to-day operations of the site and am primarily focused on our company's rakeback business (including the rakeback section of PocketFives). I still take a very active interest in the site, and you'll often see me responding to threads in the forums on topics ranging from how to play AK out of position to what I think is the next legislative step regarding online poker in the US.
I live in Escazu, Costa Rica about 5 minutes from our company's office. I primarily play live poker now, but you can still occasionally find me at the online tables, primarily as cassowv on Full Tilt or AdamP5s on Bodog. If you see me around the forums or at the tables, be sure to say hi and tell me how I played my hand wrong ;)
