How I know people who believe in Hell are faking it.
By bfactor on 05-14-2008 12:47 PM

It's really pretty simple.

Let's say you drive around in a van, and drive around some city picking up random people off the sidewalks, and kidnapping them into your van, and you have somee big underground dungeon with a few dozen chambers, and you put each person into a different chamber.

Then you go to each chamber, and you say this, one by one, to each person, in each chamber:

"Hi.  Sorry to break the news to you, but I kidnapped you, and you are currently in a dungeon cell which you cannot escape from.  I am a professional torturer, and I've decided to torture you all day every day for the remainder of your life.  I will be shoving red hot needles underneath your fingernails, splashing water on your back, and electrocuting you with an electric brush, drilling into your teeth, into the live nerve, without any pain killers, etc for the remainder of your life.  This might be decades.  Sorry dude.  You're one unlucky mofo.  Your life is gonna suck sooooo bad it isn't even funny.  Bye."

and then you walk out of the room (and have a hidden camera filming the person in this room)

I bet all 20 or 30 of the random people you put into these chambers, ALL OF THEM would not just calmly sit there, all relaxed and shit like "Bleh, oh wells...."

No.

They would all be FREAKING THE FUCK OUT.

Like, they would all be running around in their chambers going "OHHH SHIIIT!!!! OHHH NOOOO!!!! FUUUUUCKKKKK!!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!! NONONONOOOOO!!!!!"

etc on and on like that.

They would be totally freaked out about the idea of getting severely tortured by a professional torturer all day every day for the remainder of their life.

Really, they would, this is a normal human reaction to news of this sort.

Now, think about it.  A human lifetime is like 80ish years on avg.  So these guys are running around, totally freaked the fuck out about getting tortured all day every day for a few decades right?

But now let's say you walk around on that same sidewalk.  But instead of kidnapping 20 or 30 random people, you instead walk around and briefly interview 20 or 30 random people (90%ish of which claim to "believe" in heaven and hell).

So you are like:

"Hi."

person says

"Hello."

you say

"So do you think you're going to hell when you die?"

person says

"Yes.  Almost everyone will."

person then calmly <----key point walks away.

Notice anything?

Yeah.  That's right.  The person wasn't freaking the fuck out.

Gee.... that makes a lot of sense...

NOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

So when confronted with a few decades of permanent severe daily torture, the person is gonna be running around in circles, freaked the fuck out, screaming and crying and shit, but when confronted with an ETERNITY of torture, and actually worse torture than any torture that could be administered by even the most talented torturers on earth, for not 100 billion years.  Not 3942839042830942 trillion years.  No.  ETERNITY.  FOR FUCKING EVERRRRRRRRRRRRR the worst torture ever forever, the person's all like "meh..."

Yea...

Yea you clearly really believe in it......

I can tell.....

PSSSHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I CALL BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, if you Google something and get your information from there, then that counts as "thinking for yourself"? Just making sure...

Thinking for yourself, since you seem to be grasping for a definition or explanation (makes one think you have never done this before), is reading many (all if one could possibly do so) different points of view, filtering out the crap and what you have left is it.

It is actually pretty easy to do. It's like anything else, the more you do it, the better you get at it.

I'm having a hard time figuring out whose side you're on here.

this is perhaps one of the worst non sequitur arguments i've ever read.

many believers aren't scared of hell because they aren't facing it as a risk.  if they've followed whatever necessary tenants then they aren't going there.

Hey ECUgirl, I wanted to respond to your post, because I feel like you can respond without taking things too personally, which is what people tend to do on both sides of these discussions.

If the main message of Christianity is love and forgiveness, then why is homosexuality a sin punishable by eternal hell? More and more research is linking homosexuality to biology, and that especially in men it may be proven its nature, not nurture. I personally believe it has always been a mix of both. Homosexuality has been prevelant, on and off, since as early as humans recorded history.

I first began to question Christianity over this exact issue. Someone in my family is gay. This person is the most selfless and giving person I know, and would give the shirt off his/her back to help a complete stranger. This person is still a Christian and goes to church, and believes that he/she will be going to heaven. This person would never hurt a fly and has been with his/her partner 10 years, only can't get married or live openly with their partner in peace due to local laws and the insular and hateful nature of their community.

All my life I have seen this person as a shining example of a good role model, and yet they are constantly given grief over their sexuality and have even left churches because of the hateful treatment they have received from other Christians.

Now that I have no direct experience with God, meaning I've never met him, lol, but I know this person is full of forgiveness, tolerance, kindness, and integrity, and I have seen this illustrated over and over all my life. Since the Bible says that you can't choose who you want to love, and to love someone of the same sex is a hell-worthy sin, then I should choose the ancient book and the mythical father figure to guide my life? Am I supposed to have a supreme amount of "faith" that allows me to shun the family member in favor of what the bible says is right?

On a relevant note, if science does find an irrefutable link between certain types of dna and homosexuality, then will the Christian stance change? Will people still believe that its a sin if someone is born into it? Or will Christians conveniently reject the scientific method which proved it so? I am not mocking I am very curious because as a rational and educated person I would (were I a Christian) find that to be quite a philosophical pickle.

And a note to whoever said these threads turn into non-Christians trying to force their beliefs on Christians, I'll have you notice that I wrote one of the longest posts in the thread, and I didn't even mention what my religion was.

I would never force my beliefs on others, in fact I will make it a point not to tell anyone here. I put in the time and thought to find the kind of spirituality that i want to be a part of (although I guess spirituality is not the correct word since I dont believe in a "spirit" per se), and I think everyone else should too.

Thank you for being able to respond to queries like an adult, F all of the children around here who just want to belittle people.

Hmmmm, guess your sarcasm detector is faulty...

Since you responed under my post I assume you are saying that I am belittling people. I have belittled no one, please read the whole thing, I have only responded to people poking at me. I didn't call anyone an asshole nor tell them "fuck you" and, although my rhetoric has been direct and maybe painful to hear for some, I never belittled anyone in my responses.

Some might view ecugirl's post asking if by simply doing a google search I was "thinking for myself" as an attempt to belittle me and my ability to do basic research or, worse, that me "thinking for myself" was a laughable concept. So, like the subject at hand, it seems it would depend on how you choose to look at it.

Pretty weak-sauce, you couldn't come up w a better serial killer than that? I guess you were going for the obscure angle and I admit I did have to google the name so you succeeded w that, clearly eyeknows less about serial killers than you do, good job.
