"A Brief History of Time" by SH

An earlier post about Stephen Hawking sparked my interest in him. So I'd like to read his most famous book: A Brief History of Time. I'm not a physicist. I've only taken one introductory course in physics and a the basic calculus series in college. Would this book be over my head? The origins of the universe and the cosmos and "what is out there" have always intrigued me. Has anyone read this book or other books by Hawking? The way the book is described on wikipedia makes it seem like it is written for the lay person, but I don't know if this is true.

Of course it's for you... that's why it's a 'brief' history and not an expanded history

If anyone has read both versions, which is better in your opinion, the longer original version or the more concise updated version?

I would go with A Briefer History of Time.  It has some updated stuff and is the newer version
